Please see: www.oppenauer.com/CAPPACHINO
This boat is just a clunker to us and the plywood except the middle where the stringer is good.
The hull like new, the stringers on the side are totally covered with glass and great shape.
The stringer (keel) in question is perfect for the first 4 feet then rotted half way down only for the rear 6 feet.

Kerosene + Road Flare will take care of it.
I'd pull the eggbeater first.
Other than that, it's garbage.

It's not that bad guys. It looks like the center board is really only there to support the floor (at least from the pics), so if thats the only thing that's rotten, just pull out bad part and replace it. Tie it in as good as possible to the not completely rotten part and it should last for a while. I do think if you started to tear it appart you would find more rotten wood though.

Thanks all appreciate the feedback but think that when the only thing rotten is the top half of a centre stringer and then only about 6 feet of it and a small amount of decking. Trashing the boat which otherwise is in very stable condition is unrealistic. I would imagine that boats ride at full tilt (only a 50h) with total mush stringers all the time. The hull with it’s rigged fibreglass and it’s ribbed V shape must with a double at most points plywood on top and a centre stringer just filled in with resin or something be pretty strong . This 2X6 cant be the most important strong hold except to hold the floor separate from the hull. Just my opinion.

sister 2 pieces of 3/4 ply on each side fill the center, glass it, and put the floor back.

Nope. Never repaired a stringer. Never bought a rotten boat (except a Tracker with a rotten deck).

One of the reasons I love Boston Whalers.

Another poster that asks for "advice", but will follow his own agenda.

CPES and lots of it, AFTER you get rid of the coffee grinds and get it totally dry. Then marry a fill in piece, more CPES, Epoxy, fiber, epoxy, new deck, your done. Or you could rip it out and do it right. Bout the same money and time, your call.

How's the foam? If the center stringer is rotten, its probably because of the wet foam. Plus, if the foam is saturated with water, you have extra weight that you will be hauling around. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Re: STRINGER REPAIR getting contraversial! hasen't everyone fixed a stringer?

As explained everything about this boat is ok. no there’s no other rot the side stringers are good.
The main reason I don’t want to replace the whole floor is because the it is so well glassed to the hull. I would just caulk a new sheet of plywood on top. If i dig out the old stringer I will upset the foam which is good except for a small piece an animal ate through. Can fibreglass resin be poured between foam of will it melt the foam or something?
Bomar this boat has one problem a partially rotted stringer and a bit of decking. I do take a lot of advice and have found some that bides well with my situation but to suggest I just trash it does not sound reasonable to me. I thought you were joking until your second comment.

The problem is that you need to get down to the hull to replace the center stringer, so you will need to remove some foam. Even though it wasn't wrapped in glass like the others, it still needs to be secured in place, you can't pour anything in there and expect it to hold up. You won't need to take out much foam, but you need enough area to glass in the new wood.

That repair technique alone speaks volumes about your intentions.......

Try some self leveling cement. That should fill in the rotten stringer and level out the floor.

And make sure it's air entraining.....it will be exposed to the elements, so that's a must.

One last thing- make sure to it paint it real good with latex paint. That way it is nice and water proof. Should last for years.

It should be repaired properly, which means all rotten wood should be removed, and new wood should be glassed in. Anything less is a temporary measure at best. These repairs are not that difficult, and once done properly will give you a problem free boat for many years to come. Do a search on the various projects that have been done on this forum. They all have the same central theme of complete teardown and rebuild.

For those who want to tell this person to burn it or trash it, this is a project boat forum. This is not an I Have A Crap Boat Tell Me To Not Waste My Time And Just Buy A New Boat forum. This person is here for guidance. If he has his mind already made up and is trying to confirm his technique, then give him constructive reasons why his plan will not be optimal. Otherwise, keep the crap in Dockside Chat where it belongs.

Re: STRINGER REPAIR getting contraversial! hasen't everyone fixed a stringer?

I want to thank you all. Even bomar if only because he’s funny, probably extreme or nothing thinker but mostly because he’s not afraid to say it out loud, about fishing. Around here I tell everyone that I would no sooner fish than change the oil in my car. They just look at me like i just insulted their religion. And always JB who last fall when my obsession with boats developed, helped with motor ID's, repairs and winterizing. The winterizing article one hangs in my make shift boat motor repair garage.
Self levelling cement ? As in epoxy or Portland?
I did look up Boston Whalers. Man they rock. However, as the ultimate boat is better than the rotten boat, so is the rotten boat better than no boat if in a month all kinds of Germans are coming over to go boating. Please, this is only to clarify with respect.
Rubberfrog that changing fish aviator is great . How can I get something like that? It would work on my website.
