The shift cable housing that bolts onto the top of the lower unit requires a special tool to remove the shaft that holds the pinion gear and double-sheeve pulley. I believe that special tool has a female threaded end (like a nut), but I cannot see into the housing well enough to determine the shaft dia or the thread type (NC or NF). If anyone can tell me those 2 pieces of info, I'd be able to jerry-rig a tool to pull the shaft and thread my cables around the pulley. The much slower Plan B would be to acquire the tool... any offers there?

I also would appreciate if anyone can with certainty give tips on how to route the two cables around the double-sheeve pulley in a manner that makes me happy after I button it all up and test it.

Thanks for any guidance.http://forums.iboats.com/images/icons/icon5.png

I know there are a couple members here that have made their own tool for this job. F14CRAZY and Dothedew both say they have made one. I doubt you will find the original tool(OMC part no. 909881) as I have been searching for it for months, just in case, and have never seen it available anywhere. I went ahead and scanned the disassembly and reassembly procedure from my OEM manual for you. Thats about all the help I can give! Good luck! View attachment iboats1.pdfView attachment iboats2.pdf

Re: Stringer shift cable housing disassembly question

Turns out to be very straightforward... the thread on the "pull" end of the pinion gear shaft is 1/4" NC (male). So I drilled a half-inch bolt and threaded the hole (female). Added a large nut to the bolt, screwed the bolt onto the shaft end, then pulled the shaft by holding the bolt head secure and screwing the nut down against the housing. Worked perfectly!

The most difficult part was determining the thread size on the end of the pinion gear shaft. It's a small space where it's impossible to tell by eye, but trial-and-error with a few different nuts was the way. http://forums.iboats.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
