Yeah, the motor can be rebuilt. It's just an electric motor. I was however told that if the armature and windings were ever oil soaked that they would never deliver full torque again. I am not so sure that I believe that however. Although my motor is now 32 y/o, it has been soaked and cleaned a couple of times.
I'd call around to local alt/gen/starter repair shops and see if anyone can turn and recut the commutator. Clean her up, throw in some new brushes and away you should go.
Still wouldn't hurt to have a spare tho. I'd like to see a torque test on one of the after market units. That would be the only key as to whether they were any good.
