Re: Stringers rotted....

Glad to hear the tear out went well. Did the boat have a bilge area? 3/4" and 1/2" should be just about right. Your thickened resin for the glue up and the final two layers of 1708 and resin will finish her off to 1 1/2".;)

Yea it does have a bilge area

Yep Arauco is good Stuff. Go for it. I posted a Drawing of how I'd recommend you attach the stringers to your transom and how to do the bilge area with drainage. NOT set in stone but I think it's a good method. Your boat so do as you think best. Use 1" pvc, that way you can use the cheap compression plugs for the drain holes to keep any water from backflowing into the hull.

Re: Stringers rotted....

You could but you would use more glass and resin. I'd stick with the 3/4 and 1/2. But... It's up to you.

Re: Stringers rotted....

TIP: make some marks on the sides of the Hull with magic markers where the old deck was attached. That way you'll know where it was and you can run string lines from side to side when you need to make your new stringers and need to determine how high to make em. We can discuss this more when the time comes. Make those marks and DON"T grind em off.;)

thanks for the insight will do! GOt the stringers out last night but had to do it the hard way cuz we don't have an angle grinder or reciprocating saw yet and the dremmel took a dump.. SO took a file and hammer and a crow bar and peeled them out... So still gotta grind the rest of the old glass out. but am comin along with the project one step at a time will have some $$ to throw at it very soon to buy glass an resin and a %&#$& grinder. HOPING to have her in the water EARLY JULY!! ambitious goal but gonna go ahead with it, but still gonna keep it fun and not kill myself to get it done at the same time.... will post some more pics soon

Re: Stringers rotted....

thanks wood! think I am gonna have to send u a 12 pack or something for all ur help... :D Ok got some grinding done last night gets pretty hot with all that gear on was about 90 degrees....... We are working on this project in a subdivision outside so grinding after dark is out of the question... at least the houses are spread out a little so that damn glass dust wont get all over the neighbors at least I hope.... I have a concrete/masonry grinding disc on there and it is doing the job but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a better disc i could get for the 4 1/2" angle grinder that would do the job better? Also I hear a lot about using ply for stringers but my two outside stringers were 2x6 and the cneter one was a 1x12 so guess I will go back with the same any suggestions on what type of lumber in those dimensions for the stringers?

Re: Stringers rotted....

I did some stringers using dimensional lumber that I had drying for over a year....not pressure treated, but that chemically treated stuff with a lifetime warranty against rot. Copper arsenate imbedded into the wood. (Nasty stuff....Use the same protections as when cutting fiberglass.) Anyway, once dried, that was some hard wood...unbelieveable just how hard it became. You couldn't pound a nail into it, harder than an oak tree stump.

I wouldn't use any dimensional lumber unless you have time to let it dry...really dry, indoors for a year. The only dry stuff you'll find in the store are usually kiln dried studs, which you don't want to use. (Too soft....and they will rot at the first drop of moisture.) On the other hand, the plywood provides a nice dry material, available in several types. If you don't want to spend the cash on marine grade, an ACX grade uses waterproof glues and will work well. Still seal it up on all sides.

For cutting the old fiberglass, there is something better than a 4 1/2" grinder. I discovered my air powered cutoff tool, with a 4" blade for cutting metal, was 10 times faster. (Just be careful....it's really fast!) I then used the grinder for the final work. I bought a few 10 packs of the cutting wheels at Harbor Freight pretty cheap. One disk was good for 15 minutes......but you could do some serious cutting/trimming in that time!

Favorite tool for final cleaning of the hull interior: Buy a decent Random Orbital Sander. You know the ones with the little bag that collects the dust? Pull the bag off and voila, your shop vac end plugs right into it. Grab the best filter for your vac.....you'll catch the majority of the stuff. 80 grit to smooth out the real rough stuff.

All the safety stuff is a must. The small glass particles are the worst......no boat is worth fixing, if 10 or 20 years from now your lungs are shot.

Thanks for the input Robert. Yea been doing this project on a budget but on the safety gear didn't skimp out bought the 3M p100 respirators and all the rest that goes with it goggles, tyvek etc last night was sanding and my buddy was grinding and had a couple of whiifs of glass come through damn respirator wasn't sealing all the way just a little loose hopefully not enough to hurt me...... will be glad when this grinding is done!! too damn hot and the dust sucks ... hahaha well got about 50% done will post some pics tomorrow hoping to knock the rest of it out tonight!!

Re: Stringers rotted....

Been working on grinding the hull since wednesday a couple 45 minute runs every evening or morning before it gets to 100 F Going slower than I expected... getting there slowly... The stringer channels and parts of the hull are coated thick with resin!! I have a 4.5 inch grinder and a flap disc and metal grinding disc, it seems to work pretty well... Been grinding till I get a nice speckled apperance on the hull past the red resin, is this where I need to be as far as grinding down thickness? Also I punched a hull right in the keel trying to get the wood out with a file and hammer tired and too hot..... and thats what happens about a 1 inch diameter hole... still pissed about it.. any thoughts on how to patch it up? I was going to get some wax paper, flexible cutting board and tape them together then tape that to the bottom of hull and pour pb in the hole on the inside of the hull and then apply the PL adhesive and then the stringer on top of that.. do I need to apply glass to the outside of the hull too
and if so do I have to flip the hull to do so?? I know I have a lot of questions but I could really use some feedback guys thanks a million!! :D mark

Re: Stringers rotted....

Yep the red speckles is good fresh Glass. As far as the hole goes, just tape over the outside with some packing tape and as you say smear some PB over it... but I would go ahead a lay a a layer of 1.5oz CSM over it and a layer of 1708 for good measure. You should be able to sand and fair the outside and do some touch up with Gelcoat without to much problem. No flippin the hull should be required for a hole that small.
