Re: Stringers rotted....

Here's how I recommend that you install your stringers. I would use the 404 or 435 Poly resin and 1.5 oz CSM mat and 1708 Biax Cloth. Start with 5 gallons of resin and 15 yds of mat and 15 yds of 1708.
Coat the stringers in Resin and apply the CSM making sure to wrap the edges. When they are dry, Lay down a bead of PL Premium Adhesive on the bottom edges and let it set for a couple of hours so it will firm up a bit. When it is firm but still a bit squishy, install the stringer and tab it to the hull using 3 inch wide by 12" long pieces of the 1.5oz mat. Mix your resin HOT so it will set FAST. This will get the stringers, IN PLACE and vertical. (NOTE: Make sure you have a way to brace them and keep them 90 degees and in place). When the tabs dry, mix up the Peanut Butter(Thickened resin) and fillet in the stringers using a Large Plastic Spoon. Wait till the NEXT DAY and then start laying the 1708 over the stringers. The first layer of 1708 should extend out on the hull approx. 4-5 inches and the 2nd 8-10 inches. Try REAL hard not to get air bubbles in the cloth. Use your hands and the stick pins to hold it all in place. A 6" Plastic putty knife works well to help smooth and spread. Just don't STARVE the cloth of resin.

Wood,

Something in this picture I don't get. Blue and green lines that represent the outer layer of 1708 show up at the bottom of the stringer. Is this by design or just a mistake in the drawing? If it is by design, there is no way - of course - for them to be the outer layers; does this neams that the bottom edge of the stringer was glassed first before beding the edge on the PL?!!

Good CATCH!! Mistake in Drawing!!!! The Stringers Are ONLY encased in CSM Before Bedding in PL. The 1708 Is ONLY on the OUTside and Attached to the HULL. I will correct the drawing for future Posts. Thanks for the Heads Up!!!

Good to know I was just gonna cut and place the stringer then bed the stringer fillet then glass it in because the old one had no glass on the bottom but will follow your recommendation so cover stringer in resin then add csm mat then install stringer in boat bed and fillet and then add two layers of 1708 over stringer and attached to the hull..... This grinding seems like its taking forever have spent at least 6 hrs so far and probally got another 3 or 4 hours left.... But I want to get a good solid bond so I am grinding down to the speckle glass on the stringers and transom.... also have some low spots in places from grinding should just level these off with pb or can I just leave em....? Glass and resin should be delivered today!! ready to put this dust behind me and start glassin!! :D also gonna bond the two peices of transom ply tomorrow so here is the plan of action see whatcha think cut csm mat to shape of transom. Apply resin to both inside peices of plywood and add the csm mat and resin over the mat bond peices of ply together and screw in some drywall screws to hold it in place and park the truck on it over night????

Re: Stringers rotted....

When you set your stringers....
Use some 1/4" dowels as spacers to hold the stingers up off the hull. don't worry about irregularities the PL will fill em. Make sure you have a bracing method devised to hold everything vertical. Squirt the PL under the Stringers and use a Large Plastic Spoon to Fillet it all in place. HINT: Dip the spoon in Paint Thinner to keep the PL From sticking. NOTE: The PL MUST cure for a minimum of 36 - 48 hours before you can start glassin'.
Once it cures, remove the spacers and cut some 3" by 10" strips of CSM and tab in the Stringers to hold em Vertical and when the tabs dry you can remove the bracing.

Transom....

This guy is doing it right.... Notice how he is overlapping the edges first. You can then come back and do the flats. When the front sides of both pieces are dry then do the mating sides and glue em together. Your clamping thinking is SPOT ON!!

Re: Stringers rotted....

Alright well the first attempt to bond transom ply together did not go so well as it is back apart again. I know I mixed it up to weak because it took all night and some of the next day to harden and it was still a little sticky when I took screws out that were holding it in place. It just started coming apart and csm mat looked like it did not have enough resin but I coated it really good wondering if it is because i mixed it to damn weak..... do i need to do anything to the ply now before i try it again I am going to try it one more time but if it doesn't work I am just going to use pl adhesive any thoughts on this??? Is it better to have a dried layer of resin coated on the wood before I fiberglass over it?

Yes, you should always Precoat your wood before laying mat. And it does sound like your resin mix was WAY off. What % ratio did you use? You need to scrape off all the bad goopy stuff, Clean it REALLY well with ACETONE and start over.

Well the mekp instructions said for temps over 90 degrees decrease mixture by 50% so it was about 630pm and about 95 f outside I mixed it up at 50% reduction poured one quart of resin then mixed in 1/8 oz of mekp instead of 1/4 oz....... so gonna give her another run tonite and i will mix it up hot!!!!!!! do not want to have to do it a third time thanks wood!!

Finally finished grinding the hull last night!!! :D after three weeks of grinding got the hull down to the speckle I think we put about 12 to 15 hours of grinding into it.:facepalm:a lot of resin was slopped in there especially on the center stringer in some places over an inch thick! Transom alos bonded well the second time, mixed up more than 1/8 oz for one qt of resin and it kicked off right after we bonded the two plys. didn't park the truck on top this time just screwed and weighted it down... SOLID AS A ROCK now! Back to making progress instead of steps back. will be cutting stringers saturday night and putting transom in sunday. question when filling grinding marks that have went in to hull to far use thickened resin right? and can I do this before I am ready to lay glass on top or should I repair the marks right before I lay glass? Thanks for all your help on this rebuild!! I had really no idea how to restore a boat before iboats and just getting out there and gettin my hands dirty.. I would do it again in a heartbeat may even start flipping a few boats who knows:eek:

Re: Stringers rotted....

Like my drawing shows, you're gunna be mixing some thickened resin when you set your stringers so use it to fill the gouges then. Sounds like your making progress. Uhhmmmmm where's those pics to prove it!!!!

Re: Stringers rotted....

Hey thundercraft84,
Where are the gouges at in your boat. Looking at one of the pics above, it looks like it's where the transom and the bottom of the hull meet. It looks as if you ground down thru to the gel coat.
If that is the case, I would tab some 1.5 csm and some 1708 baix over the gouges before I put in the transom.
I really can't tell from the one pic. I would be sure to beef up any place that you ground thru all the fiberglass.
