While looking to but our first boat this past summer, we ran across several sellers who were more than willing to run the engines for us if they couldn't (or wouldn't) meet us at a lake. About half of those used a hose adapter to supply water for the run. The other half were content to run the their engines "for a little while" without water. What were these people thinking?!?

Being a first time buyer, even I knew that was a stupid thing to do? As soon as they would do that, their sales pitch was over.

One guy let his run for over a minute while he tried to tell me how easily the cracks in the fiberglass could be repaired (didn't mention that in the ad). Take care of your damn boat!

People just don't realize the damage they do in a very short time.

That was one thing that helped the guy sell his boat to me was he said he would crank the motor over but didn't want to without putting water to it and it was to cold out to drag the hose out and run it. Told me he knew about messing up impellers without water. Smart man.

Re: Stupid sellers

I would not buy any boat without a test run in the water. Unless that is the price was low enough to replace a lot of stuff if necessary.

Does that mean a brand new boat as well? or are you just talking about used boats?

I think you should definately test drive new or used. How else would you know the handeling caracteristics or performance before purchase.

Re: Stupid sellers

A final Sea Trial should allways be in a NEW boats sale contract

In bigger boats many people pay for a private survey before delivery to find things that need to be fixed
