Substandard building materials?

Put a new roof on my bro's garage last weekend and was amazed at the quality of the building materials. We bought the mid-priced everything.

The tar paper ripped when walked on, in 75 degree weather and the shingles deformed when walked on. We used plenty of staples on the paper and it tore no less than 10 times almost landing me on my head.. I am no small guy, 6'4" and 250lbs but the stuff was pathetic. I talked to a friend who moonlights doing roofs and he said this was par for the course. He wrote a letter to the mfg stating that he would no longer use this product based on his similiar experience. (Months earlier)

Is this common or am I just seeing an isolated experience? The roof came out just fine but took twice as long as it should have to put on. Beyond that, this stuff is downright dangerous.

Everything is that way, and it makes me sick sometimes at the CRAP that is there.

But... you can get the better stuff, you just pay the price for it.

The question is, are they making this cheap crap and selling it at a corosponding cheap price, or cheap crap AND cheap price....

Got a pneumatic drill for $10... It is now stuck on reverse after a project at work. We didn't take it back, we got our $10 out of it.

Quality can still be had.

My 15amp Milwaulke Chop saw... can't kill it.
...10 amp rigid.... killed it

All it what you use it for. But so many people don't CARE what the quality is, they just want CHEAP

I have a brad nailer I got from Harbor freight, it's $20. Works great, but I am not a wood worker, it gets used a few times a year.

At work we have a harbor freight Framing nail gun. Worked great the first month, now it just jams up... piece of garbage, but paid $100 for it

My Porter Cable $300 nailer... Can't Kill it.

You get what you pay for.

BUT!, .. I do wish people would not make the inferior products just to get the price right. If you can't make something for $1.00, DONT MAKE IT, dont' just skimp unil you get it down to $.99

:)When shopping in the Home Depot etc: type building supply stores you get what you pay for!!!

Felt paper on a pitched roof is not made to be walked on regardless of how many staples you put in it!! I'm guilty of walking on it also!!!
Should try using #30lb felt instead of #15 cost a little more money!!!

They are ment for the home owner and in most cases the quailty isn't there!!! You buy doors with the jambs finger jointed with various types and grades of wood instead of solid pine or oak jambs etc: You buy inferior finger jointed cedar clap boards, cheap paint with less pigmentation; cheap armstrong vinyl sheet flooring with a photostat design etc:

I work for a manufacturing company as a Quality Engineer.
The general public wants cheap price #1 quality of the item #2. I see this all the time.

I certainly wouldn't run MY company with quality
second to price. my price is higher, but I stand
behind it 100%.
have lost some biz to low ballers, but many times
I get the customers back when they have problems
with crud not working or getting delivery a few
weeks late.

Milwaukee … if the power tool ain’t red, I don’t even bother with it anymore. Yeah, it costs a little more but they just don’t die.

I’ve been noticing that except for the really cheap ‘made in China’ cordless drills, most are now made in Mexico.

Pointer – backing felt/paper is made to industry standards that meet building code requirements. I’m guessing you either mishandled the product (not likely), got the wrong material, the manufacturer produced a defective product, or the manufacture is engaged in some kind of fraud by producing a product that is not to standard…in which case you may need to replace it. :(

what about if the powertool is yellow? And what about snap-on, and Craftsman I use their hand tools and every time I brake one, they quickly replace it.

"what about if the powertool is yellow? And what about snap-on, and Craftsman I use their hand tools and every time I brake one, they quickly replace it."

The key words here are "and every time I brake one".

I grew up about 1.5 miles from the Milw factory. I learned to buy it everytime I plan on using the tool more than once. And although the $99 Sawz-All is ok, the $189 model really cuts stuff up.
