I am in the process of completing my latest project, a motorcycle / motorcycle helmet mounted canoe kayak carrier/rack. I would like to be able to ride my motorcycle without a trailer to different rivers around the state and take my own canoe for some recreational paddling.

I?ve almost finished fabbing up the rack that will attach to my skid-lid, but I don?t want to have to drill holes into my new helmet. Not only could it potentially degrade the structural integrity, but if I ever have a warranty repair need, they will probably ask what all the big holes are all about? So I think that if just get some really large suction cups, it should be good enough.

What I need is probably the type of big suction cups that glass installers use to pick up large panes of glass. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Geo

So you want to attach a kayak to your head, via suction cup.

I guess your neck is stronger than mine.

I would like to show off some photos but there may possibly be a patent in my future so I don't really want to give away all the details right now.

Have you studied "physics" -- especially the part that states: "an object in motion tends to stay in motion". In a panic stop the kayak/canoe is going to put all sorts of stress on you neck. While we have no idea what the entire rig looks like, it sounds like you have several issues you haven't thought through. Like gusty side winds. Or the bow wave of air coming off a semi that passes you. If it can buffet a 24 foot travel trailer I think it would have no problem giving you a problem since the kayak is a big sail to a side wind. Then their is the issue weight and height as it affects stability. Lastly, what happens if the cups lose suction. Does the kayak do a back flip onto someones hood or go through the windshield. Interesting concept though. But safe? Only you can tell at this point.

I agree, it sounds like a huge liability.
A small trailer behind the motorcycle is a good idea. I actually considered this during the jump in gas prices. Here's a picture:

One more thing:
I've used the professional glass cups and believe me, they won't work on a curved surface like a helmet. You better get the drill out!

Before you try it out, invite "World's Dumbest. . . ." to videotape it. They might even pay your hospital bill. . . if you survive.

No doubt the chin strap will be replaced with a length of cable and a safety chain.

And he will also have to velcro his behind to the seat if the nose of the kayak gets any higher than the stern. Boat or not, it will act like a wing. Would be real neat to see him zipping down the highway hanging onto the bars with his butt about a foot off the seat. This is getting goofy, guess I better lay off the adult beverages.

All the negativity was never expected but to the negative nellys remember the people scoffed at Noah also when he built the arc.

I am hoping to be advertising my design right here on iboats one day and am surprised no one has invented this before now.

Re: Suction Cup Reccomendation Needed

I'll try to be constructive, why are you going to attach it to your helmet when the whole rack can just be bolted to the frame?

The suction cup to the helmet thing is either a joke, or stupid, mounting something that large and that high on a motorcycle is in the same category.
