Re: super tec oil

I have used it in my 2 strokes for years, Mark. Good oil.

Moving this to Outboard Non-Repair, where it will probably start a war.

Re: super tec oil

'as good as' is relative, and the answer is likely "no".

Since it has achieved NMMA's TC-W3 certification, it meets the minimum recommendation of many outboard manufacturers, so at the very least they by inference would consider it to be "good enough". Like JB I've used it for years, and it's a good oil at a good price.

Re: super tec oil

Yes it is just less expensive. Basically it is a TC-W3 oil meaning as stated above should be fine. Its kinda like running Penzoil in a motor as compared to mobil 1. mobil 1 we know is an awsome oil and will run your car forever maybe. :) Penzoil will do the job but do you really want that sludge in your motor?

Personally since I have a force I can care less if it works better than the expensive stuff I want it to die sooner rather than later but I can't just run gas all alone the wife would find out and I would never ever get to post again unless it is post humusly! :D

Oh and actually I bought a gallon of the Signature oil from Cabela's 2 years ago. Not a lot of smoke, no problems running at idle for extended periods either. Plugs appear to be ok. Almost done with the only gallon I have. :)

If you are the average boater and do not run the living H*ll out of your engine, you will be fine using the cheapest oil you can by. (Why you would want to is beyond me though). Yes its TC-W3 rated and it will work "OK". It will likly be made by Shell (Pennzoil), or warren, (Valvoline).

There has to be a reason its so cheap!

Re: super tec oil

depends
if I had an opti-max or an HPDI or an OX-66 or an E-tec or fict odds are I would not. my oil injected jonnyrude 120 has had a steady diet of it since I put a piston in it in dec of 95. another 140 jonnyrude frankenstien motor I built for a crabber that is still oil injected has run over 14K gallons of gas and all on supertech and never had aa decarb. I did have to re[place the reeds last week but I did not see that as an oil failure. was also the first 89 140 reed failure I saw. so it mostly depends on what your running.

They're not using the old marketing ploy based on many people having been conditioned to by default equate price with quality? ;)

I'm just having fun with ya, no offense is intented.

while all the oils MEET the spec i want to see which ones EXCEDE the spec in some way that can be measured like even less engine wear or less carb build up

i think some do excede it but real facts seem to hard to find

tommays

Re: super tec oil

i will only run mercury regular 2 cylce in my 40 and 2-cylce plus(semi-synthetic) in my 150. IMO, im going to use the recommended and possibly a "superior" oil in my engines that i have invested lost of money into. i will never use anything else except mercury oil because i feel that it is superior to other oils such as pennsoil, vavoline ect. I want the best for my engines and to me a few bucks more isnt that big of a deal when were talking about a 4000 dollar and 10000 dollar engines.

The only benfit of oils sold by the OEMS is their ability to lighten your wallet.
I go through up to 100 gallons of two cycle oil per year and have tried quite a few. I noticed no differance in regards to carbon build up, etc. In fact I havent had to replace a plug or had a engine realted failure since I have been in the lodge business.

I doubt you would have one if you used 30W car oil at the recommended ratio either.

Everything's cheap at walmart. ;)

This is part of the reason everything is so expensive - if something's cheap, everybody thinks there's something wrong with it. Several years ago when I first started hosting websites, my business plan was to provide as good of service as everyone else, but cheaper. It didn't work. Everybody was afraid it was cheap for a reason. Raised my prices, but gave the same service, and business is booming. ;) :D

SURELY you're not saying that just because something is more expensive, it is better? ;)

Re: super tec oil

I've been running Pennzoil Premium Plus ( under $12 per Gal at WalMart)in my 1978 Johnson 115 for the past 2 years. It doesn't smoke near as much as the TCW3 oil from West Marine & the plugs look great after the seasons over.

These oils are WAY BETTER then the OEM oils from the 1970's & 80's, and there are a heck of a lot of old outboards still running well that didn't even have TCW rated oils in their day .

I think any of the TCW-3 oils are the SUPERIOR oils! But if you feel the need to spend $30+ for a gal of OEM super duper Gold oil>>> I got a little bridge in Brooklyn for sale.... :D

Yes, to a point, Sometimes. :D :D :D ;)

Its the additives that make the oil and its the additives that make up the most of the cost other than packaging and advertising.
