surging fuel when filling gas tank

Guys, ever since I owned this boat, when I try to fill the tank at a gas station I put the pistol from the gas pump in the opening for the gas tank and start pumping. The tank fills up fine, but at the end I always get a load of gas come surging back out of the tank. I have got use to just pushing the pistol in as hard as I can (this limits the amount of gas that can come out) but I can't believe this is normal behaviour. I thought the breather must be blocked, but I removed the external end and it's clearly not blocked, I then blew compressed air down the breather pipe. That seems clear, so what else could cause this behaviour? I am just concerened about the safety aspect of having gas come out the boat everytime I fill her up..

Thanks for any suggestions, the boat is a Glastron G1900 from 1991.

The trigger on the handle is not an ON/OFF switch. Flow can be regulated. The issue is that the filler is generally a long way from the tank and as the tank fills, it takes only a split second to fill the hose between the tank and the filler. As the tank nears the full mark, you should hear a slight gurgle sound which tells you the tank is full. Just a couple of squeezes of the trigger after that is all it takes to fully pack the tank.

Thanks Silvertip,

I have never heard any gurgling, and after it has spit back, if I put fuel in more slowly, I can usually put another 4 gallons in the tank, so the tank is not completely full when this happens..

This is just a thought and something I am asking to spur thought...

Is the place you fill it up always the same and the same pump?

Is the place you fill it up tilted toward the breather side of the tank?

What I am saying is to try a different place if you haven't already.

HeyThrasher, on a note unrelated to your problem but relevant, I bought a boat with grud in the tank that came from the the rubber conecter betreen the tank and filler neck. The rubber had dried and was being scraped off by the gas nozzle. Enough to plug the intake screen. Now arent you glad you have something more to worry about. New rubber connector was only a couple bucks at Napa. Sorry to be a wet blanket but its better to be forwarned

Thanks guys, I will check the rubber inlet pipe (thanks for the suggestion). Yes I always use the same pump and gas station, I will try a different station and see if it behaves differently.
