The Edelbrock kit adds some height to the carburetor, sometimes the flame arrestor does not have enough clearance with the engine cover.
Why not just get the Quadrajet rebuilt. They are very good carburetors. It is tuned for your engine and the Edelbrock while it will be close but not perfect. Also you will have to re route the fuel line.

i have nothing but problems with my quadrajet ,i can not get consistancy out of my qjet had qjet for a year ,then had to have it rebuilt ,then bought another one ,remanufactured ,got it from I5 ,and that one never ran right from the get go ,so when i took out of winter storage ,the carb was leaking like a siv ,so i rebuilt got it back up and runnig ok ,but constantly playing with idle then air fuel mix ,then choke not opening correctly ,so after a little research ,edelbrock has kit number 2697 ,to swap and have all parts ,i believe , except throttle cable stud, so why not try something different, its like a girlfield if she keeps pissing ,you don't keep going back and try and fix ,you get rid of the girl,so what i need to know is if a edelbrock 600cfm is a good match for my motor or is the edelbrock 750 better, also i have not seen any one say that swapping to the edelbrock was bad or the worst thing they did

More than one person has recommended an Edelbrock vs a Quad. I don't know the best CFM for a 305. I'd say a 600 cfm. If you had a stroker, maybe a 750. Just my 2 cents.....

Alot of times when rebuilding a quadrajet, people ignore the float. I learned over the years to simply replace them when doing them. They do get saturated over time and then it will never be right.

Get the 600 cfm 1409. should be pretty close right out of the box for a 5.0

One thing I found out about I5. They use ball point pen springs in place of the correct Qjet power valve spring. I had to order the correct spring from Quadrajet Parts.
As long as there will not be any clearance problems the Edelbrock 1409 should work.

600 to 650 cfm will be fine for a stock 5.0

I would rebuild the Q-jet vs buy a new carb myself

I went thru the same thing thinking that the QJet was just too old to rebuild. I tried replacing it with the exact same Holley 4160 that was used after GM quit building Qjets but I had no end of trouble with that carb even though it was brand new. I pulled out the Qjet, carefully rebuilt it and it’s been fine. I got a great quality rebuild kit from Cliffs High Performance. Better quality parts that hold up to ethanol in e10 gas.

The 1409 is the right size. You will have to carefully go through the entire calibration process. All it takes is one throttle range being lean to ruin your day. And too rich just poops out dollars.

The issue with QJets is Rochester quit making them in 1990 which is a long time ago, if you have an original unmolested core that was original to the boat and it’s not corroded inside it can be rebuilt to work as well as it was when new. However some vendors are selling what’s called Franken carbs which can be made up of a few different carbs and not really calibrated to your engines specs. These can be a lot of trouble so if that’s your only option you well might be better off with the Edelbrock bought new and properly set up.
