sync / link questions not in book...

for 1981 70hp evinrude
I have been going over the procedure from the solec manual and have a few questions...

It seems to assume that the throotle linkage from the cables is adjusted properly or seems to be leaving out a detail. When I loosen the cam roller on the carb, it does not even come close to being able to line up with the short mark on the cam plate.

How do I set a baseline setting for all the linkages before I start the sync procedure? The book just doesn't seem to cover it. Or I am missing something...

I am not a fan of Seloc,And I don't have the Evinrude manual here.

I think the baseline starts with the throttle cable not attachted.

Then setting the idle screw to a few degrees of timing, then doing the linkage.

Guess we both need the real OMC manual to do this.

DHP

I hope that I can describe this in understandable terminology. My 1982 75hp has a arm that is attached to the cam plate that is threaded. You can adjust the cam closer to the linkage by turning it counterclockwise (unscrewing). I believe this applies to your motor. Can someone else confirm this.

Ahhhh. it does. There is the cable that attaches to the main big lever, then a smaller metal rod that attaches to the cam plate. It is adjustable.

Adjusting that rod would indeed get the cam plate closer to the cam roller, but that would not answer the question of is my ignition timing correct?

sync_01.jpg

refereing to image above ( http://www.lot-o-nothin.com/lotonothin/viewimage.cfm?id=101 in case you can't see it.)
A: cable adjustment
B: Rod from throttle lever to cam plate.
C: Timing advance lever.
D: Threaded adjustable section of rod to cam plate.
E: Cam roller / follower on carb throttle linkage.
F: Linkage to timing advanced (no adjustment)
G: Idle speed adjust. brings throttle and timing up.
H: WOT stop adjustment (edited)

After I find TDC, do I adjust D (with timing light of course) to set the initial idle timing to the spec? making sure that it is not pushing the throttles open at idle.. riiight?

Then, if E is out of range, do I need to adjust D to bring them together?

If the idle timing is 100% correct, and the roller and cam line up perfect, then the WOT timing MUST be correct, correct??

The cam plate is shaped like it is to change the timing / rpm curve, rather than a linear timing change through the rpm range I assume. Thats why the short mark is so important.

Then the little adjustment wheels at the cable (A) are for slack adjustment?

Re: sync / link questions not in book...

now I am feeling dumber and dumber...

I read the manual like 5 times, and after I posted, and looked at the pictures and all that, I see the part I was missing..

"If an adjustment is required, lengthen the throttle control rod to increase timing degrees or shorten the rod to decrease the timing degrees."

Timing control rod is D on my pic.

feeling dumb about now. This is somthing I should have no problem with at all!

Don't start in the middle of the sync & link procedure or it will still be wrong. Start at the begining and follow every step.
