I've got a 1985 Mariner 70HP that I want to get a Tachometer for. Is there anything special I need to look for when shopping around for the tach? My Mercury Quicksilver control box has a pass-thru plug on it for the tachometer, but I want to try and wire it directly to my harness (I'm doing a restore on the boat, so I have a brand new harness and easy access to it).

Re: Tachometer

When searching, I found some sites that listed them with something about poles 4, 8, or 12?). Do I need to be mindful of this?

*bump*

I can't figure this out. Is there a certain # of poles I need for a 3-cyl motor?

Still haven't been able to find any information regarding the poles. Does it even matter?

Re: Tachometer

i just got done putting a tach on my 77 115 merc i6 and poles do mattermine has twelve pulses so i had to set my tach for 6 pulses as you set it for half of what the pulses are i used a faria tach as it had the most settings it had settins for 4,6 and 8 cyliner engine as well as different pulse settings to fit a wide variety of applications. just my two cents worth. also farias website has a decnt explanation and illistration for their tachs

Re: Tachometer

Your stator has 12 poles so you need a tach that can be set to 6P (pulses) which is the most common.
