You people are no help! You barely made a case against it! Haha. Now I have to make the whole effort to see it and test it and all the angst that comes with a big purchase!

You are supposed to be the practical ones!

Cabin in my world is a waste. I am feeling this.

Keep ya posted!

Why not a wake board boat?

My brother has a new malibu wakesetter and it is huge inside has a huge engine you can even get it with the new Cadillac 557hp engine.

Has a swim platform, plenty of room, can tow anything, and it's fast.

Just a thought.

Because you can't trim up with it, because it will beat the hell out of you in anything but smooth water, and because they aren't generally good for open-water use. Also, most inboards aren't propped to go above 60mph, the high-power is used for holeshot.

24' of boat with 24 degrees of deadrise with power to spare to control bow lift (bow up/down as needed) and time waves is plenty for the Upper Chesapeake where I boat. If I look back on the past two years of boating, this type of boat would have served me better overall.

I called the seller/broker early today, and haven't heard anything. Typical garbage customer service that is found everywhere. Dumbazz. I could haul that thing outta there this week.

I swear, this is why I get a headache dealing with people anymore.

I was worried about the rough-water capabilities myself. But... She has 24 degree of deadrise and is a fairly deep V. She's not the classic lake skimmer Checkmate bottom. I mean, I am not sure of what she can do, but I intend to find out.
There is no replacement for displacement.

I resemble that accusation! :D

OK - so cabin is a waste of space. This thing is looking more like your boat all the time. Just make sure to do that sanity check sea trial in conditions that approximate the mission and conditions as much as possible. You want a day with a stiff breeze and good chop (or whatever the equivalent "non-glass" conditions are for your area.

Make sure to bring some people along to stick in the open bow so you can get a sense of whether you can even see properly when under way.

Good luck and report back asap! The only thing better than boat shopping is talking to folks about their boat shopping!

It's sad when you can't get somebody to take your money. That's a beautiful boat. Maybe to settle this skiing behind an outboard debate you could mount a 200 on each side and put a small swim platform in the middle.

Re: Talk me out of... err, umm... or into this boat purchase...?

I should have titled this thread as "Help me spend my money!"

This boat has to feel substantial, or I won't like it. I'll know. I know life in my 17' Alumacraft w/ 40 HP merc, and back in the day my 18' Chappy with 115 'rude has etched memories and a feel into me I won't forget. I love my deep V Scarab, which measures 26' 9". The interior space of a 24' outboard buries a 26' I/O.

My likes of the Checkmate are: The engine. The looks. The usable space. I like the tower because it has a canvas. I do like the performance and an open bow is a must at this point.

We have a port-a-potty on the Scarab, but the kids don't need it and the wife refuses to use it. We usually stop somewhere for lunch or -- and this is important -- we can now stop at our little place on the water of the Chesapeake with an outboard -- the water was too shallow for the Scarab. So, my potty options are actually better with the O/B. We can't pull up to our little shack on the Chessie now, so the O/B opens up a whole new life (jeeze, should have mentioned that earlier!)

Also: Checkmate makes a damn fine boat.

Never been a clamp-on fan, but never had a new one either. Working on them was well.. less than fun.
That is a great looking boat! After having a swim platform i cant imagine being without one. Family loves our open bow. Being able to get around in less water is a big plus with that one.
If you like that layout in a same sized i/o give the Caravelle Interceptor a look.
Once again great looking boat!

She is awfully sweet, but I'll give you some counter arguments for fun.

This boat has to feel substantial, or I won't like it.
I think you will miss the solid feel of a low CG I/O. They just feel more solid. I lust for an OB, but I think that would be a walkaround, center console or a tunnel. Not a family boat for me.

The interior space of a 24' outboard buries a 26' I/O.
I don't think that's true. My 23 foot I/O Bowrider has more seating than the Checkmate although my bow is a little smaller. There are a TON of Open bow performance v-hulls where I boat. That price is very good, but don't think you can't match that with an I/O. Eliminator, Magic (Sleek), Hallett, Nordic, DCB, Ultra all make them and you can have a 575+ if you want.

What's your top speed target? With a nod to Sprky, I don't think that she has a chance of seeing 70 knots as the add notes. My guess is 65 MPH. I just don't think 300 bhp, 24 ft. and 24 degrees will be all that fast. That's a big difference than the 21 in the video, and that 24 looks a LOT heavier than 3000 lbs.

the water was too shallow for the Scarab.
Don't you only pick up about 6 inches at displacement speeds? The difference between a little skeg in the sand?

I have lusted after an OB for a long time, but I think you'll miss the clean transom and swim step.

Price, looks, and performance all good. Solid feel, clean transom and performance may not be up to snuff. Need to understand your speed target. My .O2

Oh, and I know you know Phil, but to the IB guys. Even with the 575 she won't break 50. None do. No flatbottom comments please. I know about those too. Wakers, and Tournament boats do NOT break 50 regardless of power, and they will beat your teeth out at higher speeds and rougher water. And I still like them . . . not the point.

Moderators... sheesh! Always killin' the fun!

Okay, NOT ruled out is an I/O bowrider, but I am going to see the Checkmate tomorrow, at a Checkmate dealer, and I will peruse their I/O lineup.

My speed requirements are 60+. Bone empty, down hill, that boat is good 70 MPH in ideal conditions, but loaded she's going to be in the 60's. That's all I want. 60+ is my requirement.

Believe me, I was locked in on an I/O in search after search. Not ruling them out, but the 24 BRX is the leader right now. If I have two small swim platforms like the pic here, I am ok with that.

I have to feel good about the freeboard and heft of the boat. We shall see.

Hopefully, you'll eventually see me in something! Two years of living practically on top of the Chessie and ain't met you guys yet! Year one, I sloughed myself back to North Wildwood to use the Scarab there, but it wasn't fun. Too far. This year, the Scarab didn't hit the Upper Chessie until mid-July, because i was still using it down in North Wildwood, and when I started using her close to home (launching in Delaware City and barreling down the C/D) I spent my time figuring out all these locations you guys yap about. Now if somebody says, "Hey, we'll be at whatever cove", I can find you!

Re: Talk me out of... err, umm... or into this boat purchase...?

I love outboards. To that end I try to keep up to speed on all the "family/bowrider" type of boats on the market that are offered with outboards.

Early this year, I spent a great deal of time at a boat show looking at, in, under and around the boats Checkmate offers with outboards.

These comments apply to the 24BRX and it's smaller brother.

They are primarily a "go-fast" boat with a few niceties added in. The fit and finish is subpar. The useable space and seating is ok for running at high speed, not so great for a family outing on the water. The swim platforms are tiny and nearly impossible to get to from inside the boat.

I don't want to be a downer. I just think these boats are leaving a lot of "critical" elements out and focusing too much on looking good and going fast.

When you go look at the boat open the little tiny glove box and look at the fit/finish. Pop out the rear seat and look under and behind there. The fiberglass work is pretty messy. Open the ski lock and notice how small the openning is and look at the finish under there. Then try to slide/crawl to the swim platform from inside the boat. Now imagine doing that when you are wet and the sloped "deck" is slick.

Enough about the Checkmate, here is another boat that may interest you. A little smaller but 300HP on a 20', 2300lb boat sounds fun: http://www.campionboats.com/chase/600/ob/specs.php

And here's what I think you want:

vg_640.jpg

This is a 28' Sleek Enforcer, but they have a 26' Heritage and Enforcer that I think fits better. Going to have to be 5 years old to get under $50K though . . .

Hey, I do have a budget ya know!

Campion: Gets expensive 24' and new. Too expensive.

I've look at the Baja Islander, too. There's the 24' and 27' Islander. Still, new = too much $$$. The wife is on board, only if new or leftover.

60+ MPH with normal load
50g's +/- a little
Bow rider
Gotta look good (Campions look good, so do Baja Islanders) <<needs sporty lines
24' +

Keep 'em coming....
