Okay, that's tremendously useful. I didn't know that.
But since it's an inboard, and I don't plan to ski or go terribly fast, is it still so important for teh WOT issue?
Slight clarification, it's an inboard outboard, not an inboard. The difference is an inboard uses a fixed shaft and movable rudder that are on the bottom of the hull. An I/O uses a lower unit mounted on the transom that contains the propeller and also provides the steering. In general, I/Os are an easier all around boat to handle than inboards.

Ah, I understand. Thank you!

It's also called a sterndrive, correct?

:D
Hi we have a 2003 Bayliner 175 ( model down ) with a 3.0 Mercruiser and we have got it to work well, I mean sking, wakeboarding and cruising. it's not the most powerful on the block, but it is good on fuel and reliable. we fitted a Monster Tower (MT1) and a 4 blade prop, SX Smart tabs and Monster Bimini and it serves us well.
Try talking him down, we did and we got $2250 Aust of our boat.
Tacho is a must though.

Buy it, if it's a good sound boat. :)

Hi,
I own almost the exact same thing, it's a 195br......so a foot longer.

Lets dismiss 2 things:

The tach. - sure it's nice to have it, but is it absolutely needed? No not at all. Mine just stopped working over the winter, who knows why. Have I needed it at all ? nope. It's really not that important. If you push the gas forward and it isn't going anywhere - you have a problem. top speed should be somewhere like 45-48 mph.

The 3.0 - I love how people always look at it and say "wow that's only a four? but it jumps out of the water so easily? " Then you come on the internet and everyone bashes it. Don't listen to them, it will pull an adult male out of the water on skis all day long, even with a loaded boat. It's also great on gas!

About the radio, it's also not a sign of neglect. When I first bought mine (used) the boat was in excellent condition. One day while on the water the radio just stopped working. Oh well, went online and bought 100 dollar radio with sirius and an ipod dock and we're fixed better than new.

I also paid 9k for the boat, so you got a great deal!!

Do yourself a favor before you put that boat in the water as it's new owner make sure it has a operating tach. And also download the service manual to your engine and outdrive and read them cover to cover so you get @ least an understanding of their operating capabilities. Knowing what you have and it's capabilities, limitations amd needs is going to serve you and the boat well as time goes on. A boat no matter the maufacturer is only as good as the owners care for it.

The Tach problem probably just a loose wire somewhere. I wouldn't think the tach would be bad with only 150hrs on it. I would check it before buying a new one. I may be a little anal but I insist everything on my boat to work correctly and YES the tach is important if you are a motorhead or even give a crap about your engine, because the engine is the boat. If the engine blows because you over rev it the boat will be useless worth nothing.

Just remember do not run the engine without feeding it water either in the water or on muffs.

Radio I got mine with a SD Card on eBay for $72.

Good Luck

Um, kinda sorta. I agree that the 3.0 is under rated but lets be honest about it. It will push the boat just fine, and pull tubes and kneeboards and an adult skiier on two skiis, but when I had my Searay 176 with the 3.0 I tried one time to get up on a slalom ski and got tired of swallowing water at about 2 gallons. It makes a great starter boat, but I agree that you'll get tired of it in a few years.

The two happiest days in a boat owner's life.....

The day they buy......

The day they sell

:D

Just bought my first boat last summer, and have learned more over the winter than my brain can handle. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE all of it. Funny thing I've learned along the way though. What does the word BOAT mean? Bust Out Another Thousand. That's no joke.

Last fall to winterize & shrink wrap = $400. Just spent $500 for bottom paint and barrier coat. That's not including the labor (priceless). Dewinterize and inspect all engine components = $200 (not including any needed repairs)

Enjoy you're new boat ;)

People say the two best days of boating are when you buy and when you sell.....What? Been boating lately? Maybe you go out with the wrong crowd or something... Every day my boat gets on the water is a great day I am not spending watching someone else have a great day on t.v. My new boat is an old one but is awesome none the less. 1985 baja sport 200 with 200 yamaha and she screams on the water!!!!! My last boat was a cvx 17 merc 115 and she screamed on the water too. I have had nothing but great experience with boats and expect many more! So don't be discouraged by someone else havin bad days on boats. I bring extra gas and extra battery and communication and pack for the occasional unexpected overnighter. So be prepared and go out and have some fun. Do some pre flight checks and do some maint on your boat in the off season when you can afford something to go wrong and your not going out the next day and you will be pleasantly rewarded with great experiences as well. Good luck!

I hear a lot of boaters say they have to pay to get their boats dewinterized?? I dewinterize mine by hooking up the muffs and much sure it starts and runs well in which the past two springs it has with no problems. I do check the engine oil to make sure it did not leak out during the winter.

I do all my maintenance related items like change oil, gear lube, grease pivot points / bearings, etc when I am winterizing.

If it weren't for the iBoats forum I would not be able to afford a boat as I have learned a lot so I have not paid any labor cost since I got impeller changed when I first bought the boat in Oct 2007.

Thanks for the encouragement, everybody! I am picking her up tonight! SO EXCITED!

:D:eek::D

This weekend the weather is going to be crap, so it will be a perfect time to take her to the marine mechanic to fix or replace the tach.

I have to buy an anchor, chain, and rope (doesn't have one now).

Already bought cheapo PFDs for the sea trial, but I want to shop for nicer ones, and I need a throw as well.

Any recommendations for an inexpensive stereo with Ipod dock? The original AM/FM cassette player, she no work.

And I need to figure out where to paint her name -- Ruffian.

I can agree and disagree but the owners had their issues to me. I still have my 1984 Bayliner Capri we bought brand new. Still looks nearly new inside and has been stored outside for all but a few years here in MN. It wasn't hard to accomplish with a little discipline.

That's very encouraging -- I am also going to store this baby outside, having no other choice in the matter. She has a complete snap-on cockpit cover and bow cover, and an overall boat cover to go over that. Anything else you recommend for keeping out mice and keeping her in good shape?
