Re: Tankless water heater

Hey LT, this might be worth looking into...

http://www.geappliances.com/heat-pump-hot-water-heater/

I spent some time weighing everything out and decided to go with one of these ^^^. With the cost of LP, and my busy family of five, I couldn't see the savings on a tankless.

I've only had it in for a couple of months now, but at the moment, I seem to have some pretty favorable numbers coming back.

Just thought I'd make mention of it. Cheers man:)

Now this one makes sense since it is capturing and transferring FREE heat into your water tank. The only cost is in running the pump (compressor) the heat is free. It needs to be installed in an unoccupied but protected space such as a garage or basement or else it will be removing heat from your house (maybe not a bad thing in summer!) I don't know how elaborate the controls are....that could be key to reliability.

Tankless water heater lifespans are estimated to be 20 years...not 5.

Real life says otherwise, not saying that they can't but have seen otherwise. 2 waterheaters at $250 each=$500. Have looked into them for lake house but only to save space. They do make small ondemads for single rooms that are cheeper, would save money on newhouse by not havit to plumb only one water line to room.

Here's just a little more info on how I made my decision, for right, wrong or otherwise.

That fancy water heater does have me a little concerned about parts and maint.

Mine is 5 years old and going strong! My friend has one that is 7 years and going strong. What were your issues? So you actually owned one? Which brand?

I also de lime mine every 6 months.

Propane 50 gallon tank water heaters are over $500 where I am.

Not sure where you buy water heaters for $250/ea. Even 30 gallon water heaters are around $400 and if your house can use a 30 gallon water heater, you won't be spending $1500 on a tankless. Smaller models are much cheaper.

Not sure where you get your info but there are really no household tankless water heaters that are 400K BTU. Most are just shy of 200K. Rinnai are available on Ebay and other places on the net. They are less than $1000 as well.[/QUOTE

I have the reference books that the Rinnai factory rep brought in to our apprenticeship class although good to know that they are available on ebay.

also the quality of the water where you are located will be the determining factor in how long your water heater lasts regardless of tank or tankless. also if hard water is a problem they should be flushed out every 6 months to 1 year. the good thing about the tankless heaters is that you can buy just the heat exchanger for the unit. it is expensive, the heat exchanger for a reasonable size tankless heater is almost the cost of a tank water heater.

Re: Tankless water heater

tankless water heaters are not a direct drop in for a tank water heater. That being said they do offer fairly decent energy savings. A tankless water heater is basically a small boiler as it has a input BTUH (British Thermal Units per Hour) of say 400,000 BTUH where as your standard newer tank water heater only has a input of 40,00 BTUH, but as someone else in here said most of the new ones will modulate so that they only use enough gas to get the discharge water up to temp. dont bother adding a water heater blanket they dont do anything as long as you have a newer water heater they are well insulated. If you can get your hands on a Rinnai that is the brand that we install around where im at but its only available to profesionals. the cost is fairly substancial seeing as how a decent unit is almost 2k. Rinnai also offers heaters so if it looses gas it will start a electric coil to keep things from freezing. Im a plumber and if i had to make a recomendation i would go with a good A.O. Smith power vent they have high efficiency ratings and are cheaper to install and buy. I happen to have a A.O. Smith in my house now its a 1995 and its still going strong.

I had forgot about these they are a fast recovery too. We have one in the shop and have never ran out of hot water even when the car wash is being used .

Might not be bang on the number. I think he is just reminding people that the half inch gas line most have will not be big enough to fire these units. I have seen where the gas line from the meter all the way to mechanical room has to be redone.

By design, a tankless water heater doesn't have a so called "recovery time" and will never "run out" of hot water since there is no storage tank at all. The only time you would run out of hot water is if your fuel, electric or water supply stopped.
