Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

i dont know if i would disable that switch.

i had a shifter cable that the outside housing was broken and frayed but i thought well its just the shifter if i have to ill pull the cowl and shift it by hand...........bad idea one time before i fixed it - it didnt shift and when i was trailering the boat i pulled back to reverse to slow down ............wrong.....she shot forward and almost gave me and the wife a heartattack and i could have sworn it pushed the truck up the ramp a foot when i hit the trailor luckily i was dead on with the trailer
The only thing that switch does is keep the motor from starting when in gear.
It is a tiller operated motor, so I shift with the little lever on the starboard side of the motor. I have a shifter extension, so there is a big, and very obvious difference between neutral and gear.

A "walk around" is mandatory before the boat leaves the driveway or ramp.

I usaully do my walk around after I get the boat in the water :D. I probably just jinxed myself for being a smart a**.

For real though I do a walk around after I load the boat on the trailer and get it out of the water.

Isn't everyone as excited as I am to drop the boat and go somewhere and do something on the water. I am so anxious to feel that mist of salt air in my face I want to dunk my head in the water before I launch.:p

Geez, Chief, I guess I don't feel so bad now finding yourself and some of the other guys not always doing what is so easy to relate to others. Your experience has been invaluable to me; an old time boater who just happened to stumble across this forum.

Guess we're just human after all. And you know by telling on yourself it sure shows us a little more about your personal side. Thanks for the chuckle, my friend. :)

what i was getting at was fix the prob dont do like i did and shrug it off.

i watched a guy one day(with a tiller) jerk on his motor about 5 times ...........standing up...well she finally fired and do you know where he ended up?......yep in the drink. luckily she only ran for a second but that was enough.......i had to turn my head and laugh cause he looked pretty p*****.

im just glad it wasnt the same situation as "my favorite line"

i think its prob on page 2 by now but i still laugh just thinking about it

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

i've seen several boats operating themselves in circles, just for that reason.

That's funny.
It's one of the few things I haven't seen.
I would be no good if I ran across that!

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

I usually don't hang down here, but I had to check this thread out after a post from TD I saw . . . don't feel too bad . . . ever drive away (car) from a gasoline pump with the nozzle still in? In a company car? At the company gas pumps? Yup, yours truly . . .

I guess you coulda drove away with the water and the motor still running . . . I did pull out the boat on a ramp once with the engine still running . . . ran for about 5 minutes before I figured it out, never changed the impeller (Alpha), still cooled fine . . . Good news was there was nobody there . . . :)

I havent drove off from the pump, but when I was younger, I was fueling my motorcycle at the pump. When finished, I closed the gas cap and got off the bike to pay the attendant. Imagine my suprize when I heard the crash. Yup forgot the kick stand.:redface::)

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

I think its stories like this one that make this forum so darn valuable. Serious.

As a newbie this year, I listen to and read as many stories as I can just for the education of it all. I've had the boat out over 20 times this season and can summarize the experience with the words "So far, so good."

Of all the things I've learned, the most important is that as a boat captain I have to take personal responsibility for all facets of the journey. My wife and son like to "help" with things like undoing and redoing the transom straps while unloading and loading the boat on the trailer. That's fine, but from stories I've read on this forum I've learned to stick to MY routine and walk around the rig every time no matter who did what. I've learned to actually pull on the transom straps to check their tension (once I found one that was loose), check the drain plug, check the tilt of the motor, check the safety chains, check the lights, etc, etc. I guess you might says it's sort of like a pilot doing a pre-flight check.

My helpers figured it out a long time ago. Sure, they can help, but "Dad has his routine."

I check the plug on my tinny EVERYTIME I get to the boat launch these days.......
I take back my last comment. I backed my boat down the launch last night and just as I set the E brake and went to get out to unhook the boat I thought of this thread..... I pulled the truck back out and went to go double check the plug. Guess what....... yup, had a little water in the bottom.

One time I was a little frazzled by extremely busy conditions at the boat ramp one weekend and in my rush started the outboard with it still tilted up!

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

My dad did a similar one back in the day. After replace the impeller in the lower unit decided he need to get it in the water. He was working nights at the time and it was still dark when he got home, but he could be in the water just about sunrise. Launched the boat, putted out of the marina, through the "wetlands", under the bridge and into the river. Opened ti up and cruised for a while. A short while. the engine just died, and smoke started pouring out of the engine compartment.

He had a set of clamp on "muffs", and was able to suck enough water around them at low speed, but was basically running dry at higher RPM's. burnt the exhuast boot(black smoke) which dumped raw exhaust on the wire harness running just behind it. Melted wires don't work too good.
