Re: Teak and Maple Sole Refinish

Here’s how I’d do it
Start by testing the finish to determine whether it is shellac or lacquer rather than varnish or Poly. Pretty sure it will be Poly but you never know.
Use both lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol. Spread each on a small section of the surface, give them 15 to 20 seconds to work and then wipe the surface. A shellac finish will liquefy when denatured alcohol is applied, while a lacquer finish will come off with lacquer thinner. If either of these solvents removes your surface, you will know what kind of finish you're dealing with, and you won't need to use a chemical stripper. If the surface remains unchanged after your test, you have a varnish finish and will need to use a chemical stripper.
Choose your stripper. I like Formbys Paint & Poly remover. Tape off the area you need to protect. Apply liberally to a bout 6 sq. inches at a time and let set for 20 mins. Do NOT get in a hurry but DON’T let it dry. Use a plastic putty knife to scrape it off. Wear latex gloves and a mask. It’s nasty stuff. Repeat until all the damaged area has been treated. Let it dry overnight, Wash it all down with Naptha of Lacquer thinner, then restain it and polyurethane it.

Done!!!

NO stain!

Sasto: It looks like it is just moisture under the finish. I would remove the finish and let the area dry. Teak brightners will restore the color. Rebuild with varnish.

I have a teak sole in my runabout, so it gets tons of abuse.

Heck yeah!!! Bass & Ski boat carpet!!! Everybody Loves the bass and ski boat carpet because it feels soooo good on the bare feet!!!

Seriously though, I'd go with a chemical stripper like CitrusStrip and very light hand sanding afterward, when you try to do the mecanical sanding on something like that you get what I call the "wavy gravy" because there's no way to take the same exact amount off the whole deck.

For the finish I'd go with the absolute best marine grade varnish money can buy.

You should probably do all of this the next time she is in dry dock, the humidity with the boat being on the water will make a good finish difficult.

Here's some Starcraft porn some one posted the other day. Something to shoot for perhaps.

As always, thanks Woodonglass.

I think I will call the factory. This is a 30 'Boston Whaler. Then follow instructions.

NO stain!

I do have brighteners on hand. Sounds pretty simple, Thanks!

Already did!

You have a good point, jigngrub.

Yeah... but how many times will he have to wash his boat with hot water before it shrinks down to that size?

Now that's funny!

Thanks, guys. I'm going to get on it today and see what happens. You all have been helpful.

May very well be Holly, YD. I was told they were using Maple instead of the old standby.....Holly. Either way.

I will be getting on this soon. I'll let you know what I find.

I'm getting to this soon. I see a DA in your photo, Tahorover. What grit are you using? I'm assuming it's ok to use an orbital instead a belt sander.

BTW...I really love those Gar Woods......but then again...Who doesn't!

Thanks Guys.
