Teleflex steering install issue

OK, per my last thread, I had to remove my motor in order remove the cable from the motor mount, and I have done that. The new Teleflex cable is attached, the motor is attached and the engine hoist is returned to Lowes.

My new issue is at the other end. I am unable to remove the steering wheel to replace the assembly. I was able to detach the 3 screws holding the assemblt to the mounting plate, but the steering wheel will not come off so I can remove the whole assembly.

I have unscrewed the lock nut from the center of the steering wheel, but there is no movement. Is there something about the Woodruff Key or a trick to snap the wheel free? Otherwise I am hack sawing away. Seems like I am missing something.

put the nut back until flush pull up on steering wheel and hit the shaft with a hammer if you have a helping hand . hold a piece of wood on shaft and wack it hard

You need a puller for that, you can get one a any auto parts store for $15-20 bucks.

It is kind of a peace sign with an extra leg, you put bolts through 3 of the holes and screw them into the steering wheel and tighten the center bolt and it will pull the steering wheel off, just ask for a steering wheel puller, they will know what you need.

That is on a tapered shaft so as you tighten the lock nut it pushes the wheel onto the taper.

I would watch the "beat it till it comes off" method, if you beat it hard enough you can break your dash or ruin the head unit for the steering.

really bad cases the puller can be necessary. i have never needed one. i scrunch down put my knees behind the steering wheel, and give a couple of good raps the the center bolt and they pop off.
