Tell me I did good by walking away from this "deal"

Man do I need to stay off Craigslist. I went to check out an 83 Dyna-Craft tonight, 15' model with a good running 70hp Merc. I don't have the money but he was willing to barter for some stuff I have. He's asking $1k and my stuff is of equal value at least. The motor works, the trolling motor works, the trim/tilt works, the steering cable moved freely...

But the floor was bad. I climbed in to check things out closer and heard and felt a "crunch". Not good. I'm already thinking stringers. Then looking at the transom, significant gelcoat cracks in the corners. Bad transom? Maybe. Finish was less than average, too. All of a sudden I'm looking at another cap removal, and another long term project. It was tough to walk away from since I really want a "real" bass boat, but I'm sure someone here can tell me I did the right thing. Here's a pic.

You did the right thing man. This is your wifes job. She is supposed to hide your keys and wallet whenever you are looking at craigslist.

You should have bought it, then sell the motor, the trailer, everything sell able on the boat, dump the hull and make a profit

Is an 83 70hp Merc worth that much?

Trailer wouldn't get more than probably $150 in it's current condition.

I think it would make a fine fishing boat after restoration, but he's asking too much for it. I wouldn't pay more than $500 for the lot. That's figuring $350 for the motor if it runs well and $150 for the trailer.

Yeah I think I've seen comparable motors around here for $700 or so with no controls, and around $1k and maybe a little more if it does have controls. Maybe if I was better equipped to remove a motor this heavy... It's still out there if anyone's interested.

What you have seen is the asking price....... not always the amount that was paid.

Yes the motor is worth that much to a person who is in need of it and less to those of us who do not.

I was in need of a motor and paid 1500 for a 89 Force 125 w/ controls. Luckily I have been able to use the motor for 3 years now with no major repairs. ;)

Re: Tell me I did good by walking away from this "deal"

I've seen a few decent looking listing for big motors for under $750, all over 100hp.

Of course, then you get listings like this up here....

14 ft Lund custom bass boat - $1900 (St. Cloud)

Date: 2008-04-24, 9:13PM CDT

This is a 14 foot lund with a casting platform and a carpeted floor. It is powered by a 35 hp Johnson motor that comes with a steel tank. It has a foot pedal trollomg motor on the front. It is on a trailer with a new cover. It has a livewell and hatch covered storage. It includes a Eagle depth finder, 2 batteries, an anchor, 2 oars, a pedestal seat in front, a spare tired, a bilge pump and running lights. This boat and motor work well together. Just put in the plug and go.

see attached picture ;)
