Re: Test Drive [motor bogging]

More of a rusty color now, hopeing this is good?not white anymore after i rebuilt the carbs.plugs where new when i started.

The motor has 2 different carbs as i stated earlier in this thread,i was told it was the same just from an older model motor. They appear the same except the top cover and copper tubing you can see through front of carbs. The 1 that i know for sure is factory carb for this motor has 2 bigger tubes that run from the bottom all the way up to and into the top of carb, [both carbs have these tubes]and factory 1 has a second set of smaller tubes in front of the bigger tubes that are only bout an inch long and stick up from the bottom, but do not go all the way to the top.Hope this all makes sense to everyone?Anyway my other carb does not have these second set of tubes, but there is holes there but no tubes.will this make a difference? All jets in both carbs are the right size,i checked it with my manual.

Is it possible that someone before me put the carbs back in the wrong spots?does it matter which 1 goes on top and on bottom?I put them back the same way they came off, left the linkages on so i wouldn't get em mixed up.

I read in another post that rather to rebuild a fuel pump for these motors just by a new 1.I really don't have $100 to just go by a new fuel pump just to see if it would help my issue, but i would rebuild it.Looks easy enough, but from what i've read they say it's easy to mess up.Is it really that difficult to rebuild 1 of these?I don't know how long the motor sat or anything, thats why i was thinking of rebuilding pump.

Re: Test Drive [motor bogging]

If it helps any the carb on my motor that is different from the other appears to be off an 1988 model.part #'s are different all orifices are the same, but the top cover on the 1988 has only 4 screws on the cover and the 1995 and most others have 6 screws on the cover and little ears that are about midway on the cover.

I have a 60 hp Johnson that had similar problem. Took carbs off and cleaned 107 times it seemed like. Finally rebuilt the fuel pump. Took ten minutes, the diaphram had a pin prick size hole in it. Wasn't bad at all for mine. Works great now.

still sounds like your high end jets are restricted and that would account for the lean also. you have to remove the jets and mesure them. some times soaking them does not get it. you may have to drill them out to the rite size

So are you saying that the jets can shrink?I don't understand why i would have to drill then out?I took all 4 jets out of both carbs, ran wire through them all, sprayed carb cleaner through them, and blew air through them.No offence but before i went through the trouble of measureing and drilling i would just buy new 1n's and be done with it.I'll keep that in mind though, might just try replcing them.

Thanks for info!

Re: Test Drive [motor bogging]

Have you received your manual yet?

You really need to check the WOT ignition timing.

Pull the spark plugs, ground the plug wires or attach them to a spark tester.

Connect your timing light and remote starter switch.

Move the throttle lever to WOT in Forward gear.

Crank the motor with the remote starter button while checking the ignition timing at WOT.

WATCH OUT FOR THE SPINNING PROP!!!!! A safer method would be to REMOVE the prop before testing.

What is the timing set at?

Re: Test Drive [motor bogging]

Just thought I'd let everyone who has been helping me through this hair pulling experience that after i rebuilt the carbs twice, checked all fuel lines, and finally, rebuilt the fuel pump now my motor is turning 5600-5700 rpm's.Guess the fuel pump was most of the problem all along, rebuilt it yesterday took for a test drive today and it runs great. Now i just gotta figure out the charging system.

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH,
Mike:D

Re: Test Drive [motor bogging]

Glad to hear its working. I was definitely there rebuilding carbs twice a week it seemed like to no avail, and all it took was a $10 fuel pump gasket kit.
