I was told that when a shop tests a motor in the test tank with a "test prop" that it simulates load just as good as open water.

True?

There seems to be a large number of people posting here who have the problem "fixed" at the shop, only to have it continue on the water.

The best way to test a motor w/o being on the water is with a hydraulic dynamometer, which allows a large load for a reasonable period of time. Very expensive tool, but worth it if a dealer isn't on the water. Test wheels require a large collection and are quite limited in the load allowed, plus you need a really big test tank for larger motors. The dyno can be used on the hose (really loud though). It worked with all brands of OB's and stern drives as well.

I was a dealer mechanic and had a wall full of test wheels. As said, there is one for just about every size/type of motor. In addition to that, you have to have a proper test tank or all is in vain. You cannot run a 40hp motor in a barrel even with a test prop. Even with the best of test tanks, trying to run a 200hp in it is sort of asking a lot.

One thing a test wheel will do is allow you to run the motor at full throttle and correct RPMs while tied to the dock. That is so much better than trying to mess wth a snarling monster while facing the wrong direction and going 40 MPH in a bouncing boat.
