I know I should drop it in water but any harm heating the end of the thermostat with butane torch to see if the tip moves?

I guess you could do that to see if it was OK .
Probly be easier to just boil the kettle and tip a bit of water on it .
With boiling water your limited to 100 deg C ( 212 deg f ) where as with the butane you have no idea how hot you had to get before it moves ..... if it does .

boiled water in a tea cup seems simpler &use a digital BBQ thermometer
they usually open around 140-145 f

You'll overheat and destroy it. Also this doesn't really confirm anything. You want to ensure it opens at the correct temperature.
Maybe it doesn't open at the correct temperature, but it does open at inferno.

The opening temperature SHOULD be stamped on some of the thermostats. Very small numbers.

New thermostat in. Same issue. Removed plastic thermostat housing from head. Started engine. No water coming out of gaping head hole. Just steam??

Shure sounds like water pump blades / parts came off and are wedged tightly in the passage somewhere. Try using a Garden Hose to blow the pieces back to the pump chamber. Need some serious luck

I pulled the head. Looks pretty good to me. I guess I'll drop the lower. Here's some pics with head off. Anyone know if o rings for head are reusable? Also seems to be some kind of seal around each tiny water opening? See photos

You will likely have to pull the Powerhead off the Exhaust Housing as that is likely where any pieces of the Impeller have gummed things up.
O-rings should be considered expendable. However some have reused them, claiming they worked fine, but YMMV...

Any idea what these tiny little seals around the small water ports are? Nothing is listed for that in the parts diagram.

Something about those little O rings. The ring can either get harder with age. And stay in place and shape.
Or get softer and move around when pressure & water speed are reapplied. Pure gamble what can happen.

I don't see them listed on parts diagram. Shop manual says rtv around 3 water ports. I'm assuming the 3 my fingers and thumb are pointing to? But what about all those tiny holes? Nothing seals them?
