Re: testing trim sender

My trim gauge is not moving when I trim up or down, so how can I measure or check if trim gauge is working, same for my trim sender.

Re: testing trim sender

The sender is a potentiometer (variable resistor).
Disconnect the wires from it (as I recall those senders have two wires vs. being grounded to the drive via its' mounting) and using a ohmmeter, measure the resistance as you manually actuate the sendor. The resistance should change in a uniform manner. If it doesn't, the sender is bad, if it does, your wiring could be bad or the meter may be bad. The meter can be tested by putting a variable voltage across it.

Quickest way to check the guage is to pull the wire off the Sender (S) terminal and ground it out, should make the needle go all the way over. Here is a link to a site that has some troubleshooting info for you for all kinds of guages. Guage Troubleshooting

Re: testing trim sender

Is it an outboard or I/O? I have an old style Mercruiser 165hp I/O and have the trim gauge getting whacky on me too. Mine moves too far off the gauge than what it should be, which is a simple matter of tweaking the adjustment of the trimsender unit.

Butch
