Man this is so friggin wrong, what are they thinking? I wonder if the state of Texas maintains any roads leading to this town? I believe I would cut off any state spending directed to this town, county spending would be dried up. The only federal money they would see would be what the ?INS? spent in town looking for ileagles.

<EL CENIZO, Texas (Reuters) - The border town of El Cenizo, whose population is heavily Hispanic, has adopted Spanish as its official language and declared the community a safe haven for illegal immigrants, officials said Friday.
The ramshackle town of 7,800 people is located just south of Laredo, Texas, across the Rio Grande River from Mexico.>

It would be great for everyone to take this attitude about anything that just didn't happen to occur in their own backyard.

I'd like to see your reaction if it happened in your town!

vandy,

It should matter to you too. Language is the first level of culture. Despite the fact that the US is the most integrated and racially diverse society on the planet, some things that help us identify each other as Americans are very important for our sense of togetherness. You don't have to look far to understand this. The main reason that Quebec continues to discuss independence is language, Catalonia in Spain, language. The main reason that we have allies in the UK, Australia and New Zealand is language.

Although tolerance and diversity are absolutely worthy goals and ambitions there are facts that cloud the Utopian view. Sometimes very simple ones. No matter how you feel about Illegal vs. legal immigration, assimilation is good . . . ;)

Re: Texas Town Adopts Spanish As Official Language

I would like to start by saying I don't think I am racist, but... Our country is called America, at least for me I know there are some people on this web site from other countries and I have nothing against them, but back to my point. The official language of America is - American(English in our own form) not Spanish or French or Portuguese or anything else. I don't care what language is spoken in someone's house or their own property, but if you are going to be in a public place here in America I feel that you should have to speak english. It is rediculous that people come here and expect us to learn their language and don't ever learn our language. IMO if you can't speak english you shouldn't be here. I am not talking about def people who speak in sign language, just the people who speak other languages. Sorry just my opinion.

....sometimes change is good although I don't think I would like anyone dictating a new language requirement for me or my community.
Remember the language of the Southwest 300 years ago was not english....by a long shot. However change came...and it worked out.
Having a second or third language around and better yet being conversant in it is a great thing.
All of that said....how did this get passed as legislation? local/county or state issue?

This story was first mentioned in the Boston Globe on 8-28-1999.The decision was made by the city commission under mayor Rafael Rodriquez.
