SBL,

I'm thanking you for finally telling us your age. Now, as long as as you "keep it real", you're going to get much more educating and fulfilling responses to your questions. All of us on this site were 15 once... When I was fifteen, I was an avid scuba diver (started at 13), trying desperately to save up for a Zodiac with a 40HP Johnson Outboard. Now that you've told us your age, and I hope you're being truthful about that, tell us, is it your boat? It's perfectly OK if we're talking about your Father's boat, or your older brother's boat. You've gained a level of respect in my book by telling us your age. If you want to destroy any chance of respect anywhere... All you've got to do is lie, about anything. Most people on this site would love to take a young boater under their wing, so to speak. You've just got to be completely honest. Believe me, just the fact that you're on this site, talking about boating, THAT'S COOL!!! Nothing you tell us is going to make any of us think that you're any cooler... Except for ongoing honesty, and well thought out questions.

I'd love to help you however I can, SBL... I know my Buddy LippCJ7 also wants to help you. So let's just keep the ball rolling with open honesty, tell us more about your boating adventures. If their all with family or family friends or both, tell us that. If your dream is to one day actually have a boat of your own, tell us that too... Again, that's cool!!! I was 19 when I got my Zodiac. I was 20 when I finally saved enough money for an aluminum floorboard. Just be completely honest, and you'll "HONESTLY" be one of us...;)

We have had many young people start out here and we have watched them grow up. One of our favorite people is Sloopy. Sloopy started out here and I believe he is just about out of college or soon to be. Now just update your profile so it reflects your birthday and add in your location of Rhode Island. ;)

SBL,
Now we're talkin'!!! I worked my butt off as a pre-teen and teenager to scuba dive. I worked odd jobs, and shoveled snow all winter long every year in Brooklyn, New york. I lived near the ocean and bays, but was'nt fortunate enough to have grandparents or any other family with a beach house. Your a lucky guy. Make the most of it. Gotta argue with ya 'bout one thing, though... A boat is not a hassle. If it were, we wouldn't want'em. People who look at it as a hassle aren't boaters, they're simply people with boats:(... They're the one's who either sell them cheap, or hold on to them so long without maintainance, cause they don't want "the hassle", that the boat ends up worthless due to neglect:eek:. I don't think that's you;). You seem like a pretty cool kid. Please don't take my referring to you as a kid the wrong way. When I was in my twenties, I was still a kid!!! When I went into the Military... I wasn't a Kid anymore. Still act like one sometimes:D. When I'm on my boat with my family, or alone, I'm still a kid!!!.

Good deal... It's called a deck. Yes it is a lot of work. Do you have people to help you? It's not an easy job for anyone to do, even two or three people. Working alone is obviously more labor intensive. It can be dangerous, too. Hope you've got people around, just in case... Post some pictures of the boat, and what you're doing. We love to see pictures of work from start to finish, before and after. It will also help us to help you more; besides, I think everyone involved with your posts would love to see your boat.

Or JB will take him under his wing like he did with Sloopy. :). :)

Re: Thank you smallboatlover...

SBL- I am sorry for giving you a hard time- to replace your deck- use a circular saw set just deep enough to cut thru the " floor" and not into the stringers or hull. Cut close to the sides. Better to go slow and not make mistakes- read up on the restoration section for a lot of useful info. Frisco Boater has tons of info. While the deck is out check out the stringers below for rot. jab them with a screwdiver to see if they are soft. soft= rot. Also check the transom for rot. You may have water logged foam floataion too. When I replace the deck on my 1957 ( year) LoneStar I packed it with empty plastic water bottles with caps , then sprayed them with triple expanding foam. I used 3/4 " marine plywood $$ and it is solid as a rock 15 years later.

Start a GOOD thread in the restoration section for help.

i grew up boating with the family- my 1st boat that was my own was a 12 ft aluminum jon boat that had been run over by a tug boat. paid $20 and beat the folded in crumpled 3 foot section out with a rubber mallet and sealed the cracks with silicon caulk. It leaked alot but we just wore rubber boots!-- it had a junk electric trolling motor that caught on fire in the mlddle of the lake. My buds & I abandoned ship-pulled the burning boat while swimming with a rope back to shore.

most people here have " been there and done that"

OK OK I will start calling it the DECK TOO LOL, Now we can all move on with our young Mariner in training. SBL good for you, I'm proud of you not taking this the wrong way, I think this can only be a great thing for your future on Iboats.

But slow down just a little bit were old so you kids and your text language is going to get you an awful lot of grief here so if you could work on your spelling and punctuation!! Don't take it the wrong way were like this with our own children who don't always share the depth of boating like WE do ok?

Your a pretty cool young man!
