I heard a rumor that 10pole tachs can be used in place of the white rabbit that is the 20pole. Is there any truth to this, or just here say?

In addition to a 20 pole tach, I also picked up and installed one of those $15 inductive tach/engine hour gauges. I wanted to track my hours on my OB without having to cut in a gauge or wire one up at the instrument cluster. In addition it's a nice back up for the tach on the instrument console. They are single wire jobs now (ebay) so I just wrapped the wire around my top spark plug wire and mounted it to on the wall next to OB. Seems to work well.

It's too far from the helm to read the tach numbers, but my passengers can. It always shows the total hours the engine was on, otherwise.

Re: That dreaded Tach problem...

I really like the 2nd one (Nantucket). Question is when I get this, how do I add it? More to the point, how do I wire it up as there seems to be no pre-made harness and I know next to nothing about boat wiring? I called both great lake and Faria neither offered any help, next stop was Bayliner, but I figured the boat being an 84 the chances were slim that they'd still cary anything for it. If anybody wants to make a buck or two, I'd pay to not have to struggle to figure this out. It's going on a 84' 1600BR capri with the 85hp Force. I don't have much, but I'd cover materials/shipping and a little for the trouble.

Three wires are generally used. Run 12V to the Ignition post from your ignition switch. Run ground to ground. Run purple wire in the wiring harness to the "signal" or "tach" terminal. My book kept talking about the white "tach" wire but it was wrong. The wires were properly marked at the terminal strip on the engine. If you want to light the gauges you can either jump from the ignition to the light so the light will always be on or you can run 12V from the "lights" switch of your boat to the light terminal so you can turn the gauge light on and off seperately.

I bought one of the US Marine branded 20 pole tachs that Great Lakes had for sale. It was $73 but it is brand new and has a great look. If you are in need of one, don't hesitate, they're nice. Make sure you get the one for the size hole you have in the panel. They have two sizes.

So am I to assume that there is already a harness there? My panel only has a speedo, as seen here..

Look for a purple wire under the instrument panel that isn't attached to anything. (Verify that the wire attached to the junction block under the motor cowl is in fact purple, though.)

Thank you NYBo, I'll get under there this weekend. I think I'll go ahead and buy the tach either way. Hard to pass up, they have a matching Speedo for 29.99+s/h which will look real nice next to the tach...

On a side note, anyone know what all the rest of those little dash icons are for? I'd love to see a pic of a 84' dash that's "complete", seems like mine has alot missing...

Apparently, they're some sort of "safe boating" buoy id table?

The wiring harness we're talking about is whereever your key is. That switch generally has all the wires from the outboard sent to it. There will likely be a purple and orange wire not attached to anything coming up the harness from the engine. The purple one will be for the tach signal. The orange one is for the overtemp buzzer. If you don't have the buzzer, I highly recommend you add it.

Yeah, it's there. Thanks for clearing things up. If the weather holds I'll look at it.

Beckspop,

Here is a close up pic of my Capri console showing the Nav aids that seem to have been sun-bleached out of your graphics.

The dentist in your town, Michael, and I were in the same car show a few years back.

His practice caught fire, now it's all boarded up. Thanks for the pic.
