Re: The Absolute Best Engine Ever put in an Automobile

Mopar "slant-six" Whata sweetie!
Chebby 350. It's marine equivalant got my family back to the dock twice after it's Jabco water pump grenaded....and still didn't need internal repair!

And yea buddy, Coleman Kayak -- the Toyota 20R, later to become 22R,RE and other variations. This little four banger is tough, easy as a lawmower engine to rebuild (while still in the truck, i might add). As far as i know, variations of this reliable engine are still being used? Any fills from you Toyota guys?

Sadly the 20 and 22RE engines are no longer in production. To my knowledge none of the newer Toyota engines share the block or even have the same bore and stroke dimensions. The old single over head cam heads are long gone too.

What I want to know is why can't we get Toyota diesels over here? I love my Cruiser, but I would love it more if it were a diesel. The little 3 series diesels are bullet proof.

One reason. Eco-terrorists. (can't meet the US' draconian emmisson standards).
Great engine tho! And as sure as VW got their "baby diesels" dialed-into whacko US requirements, i hold out hope for the Toyota equivalant soon.

Mopar 225 slant 6. You could hear the clickity-click sound coming from 2 blocks away. I had a monster Plymouth Satellite powered by one of these. Ran forever and I could actually climb into the engine bay to work on it - there was so much room.

No sir, The 260 evolved from the 221.

Those little VW diesels are sweet. I heard one start up in the Wal-Mart parking lot not too long ago and it was very quiet, could barely even hear it at all, just a slight diesel-y sound to it.

I was confusing the intro of the Corvette in 53 with the intro of the small block chevy in 55.

Also, the orginal SBC is still being produced by GM performance parts, and I am pretty sure most boats are powered by the Gen I SBC.

I think the Gen I SBC was in trucks up to 1998.

Ken

Re: The Absolute Best Engine Ever put in an Automobile

I've run both Chevy and Ford Small blocks and got great service from both. I have a 22R Toyota in a 4x4 pickup thats logged 285K miles and still running strong. I currently have a Cheve Z-71 with the 5.3 Vortec engine that seems to be reliable....time will tell though I figure the first thing to go on it will be something electrical since its all computer controlled. If I know I'm going to be going in deep water or deep mud holes I'll take the Toyota.

Re: The Absolute Best Engine Ever put in an Automobile

i would have to say the best american engine would be the 300 six by ford then the 230 by chevy then the 225 by chrysler in the six catagory and of course in the v8 the 283,327.318 :D
I dont think they ever put them in cars but the best engine ford has ever made is the 300 straight 6. I had one for 15 years and it ran solid till I wrecked the truck. These engines are solid and have enough torque to power large school buses. They even made a commercial version of this engine.

plus, straight sixes, [and v12's], are the only piston engines that are completely smooth. v8's are only "mostly" smooth. v8's may have all the glamor, but I-6's are hard for an engineer not to love.
