I love those year-end roundups—ubiquitous annual lists of greatest films and albums and lip glosses and tractors. It's reassuring that all human information can be wrestled into bundles of 10. In that spirit, Slate proudly presents, the top 10 civil liberties nightmares of the year:

Frankly, considering how Republican the bill of rights is, you'd think the Republicans would be crying Impeach the loudest. They should by definition be the staunchest allies of enfocing and strengthening it, not dimantling it. That's supposed to be the Liberal's job. The Patriot Act is as Anti-Republican as anything I can think of. Maybe they like the misnomer and simply ignore the content based on faith alone. I just don't get it.

JB, as a self proclaimed "libertarian" I am truly shocked at your willingness to abrogate your basic rights under the constitution under the guise that "The government knows what's best for us, and I know that because they told me so"

Any power, unchecked, will be abused. If history teaches us anything, ever, it teaches us that.

My liberties have not been depleted a bit. Well, flying commercial is pretty tough, but I agree that is necessary. I just won't fly unless I am going somewhere that I can't drive to.

If treating our enemies and suspected enemies harshly and listening to international communications involving suspected enemies is the price of security I will pay that price.

I don't think the left, even in the midst of wailing about fewer casualties in 4 years than one day on Tarawa, understand that we are at war with people who want to come here and slaughter mothers and children. They seem to want to love them to death and hate those who would protect us to death.

You can't be referring to me, Techno. I am neither.

My rights have not been violated. I get no suspicious phone calls from the Middle East or other dangerous places, therefore the government isn't listening to my boring phone calls.
I wasn't in Afghanistan or Iraq shooting at Americans so I haven't been incarcerated in any prison camps.
The people whose phones are being tapped and the people locked in the prisons are the enemies of my security.
If the government did nothing to deter the threat of terrorists, them you anti-Bushers would have something to whine about.

Maybe my rights are being violated.
My right to free exercise of my Christian religion. If my religion offends criminals then that's too damn bad.
My right of free speech to call a criminal a criminal. These Islamic criminals are Islamic criminals. They are criminal because they are bad people. It is not my fault or any other American's fault that these people are bad. My misunderstanding of their feelings did not make these terrorists bad. They made themselves bad. They are the ones that are violating my rights.

The problem is, JB, you have no idea, since they are listening in without any sort of warrant or authority, who they are listening to, or why they are listening.

I, and any other "liberal" I know, have no problem with our government listening in to any terrorist phone calls. All we ask is that at some point, they obtain a warrant thru the authority of some court that that is in fact what they are doing, and only doing. If the law is too cumbersome, fine, let's have an open debate and change the law--not ignore the law

We already know they have expanded this authority to Quakers, for whatever reason, and who knows who they will expand it to next. You apparently assume you can trust the government to do only what is in your interests. I don't, and I believe the historical record bears that skepticism out.

You are apparently far braver than I, and lots more trusting. Remember, Hillary may well be the next person that has this unlimited and unchecked power!

Probably the first debate you've ever so decisively won on iboats, good job PW.

If just for that example it's good conservative principal to never give the government more power.

Isn't it still up for debate whether or not that power already existed? I honestly don't know, but I also don't recall a "ruling" that this "power" was illegal . . . ? I am generally with JB on this one, but I am also wary of anything that grants our Government more power. Who knows the skinny, Skinny?

Re: The Bill Of Wrongs

IMO they had all they needed with the FISA court.
Anything they need beyond that is proof they want more than they will admit.

The Bill of Rights and The Constitution is supposed to trump JB's opinion QC. And for exactly the reason PW pointed out.
While the sun never sets on GW in the eyes of 12' and JB, a Clinton type administration would have Paula Jones at the top of phones to be monitored.

I have a problem with law abiding Americans subjected to strip searches, trip upsetting delays and being placed on no-fly lists if you protest those abuses.

I also have a problem with how loosely the terms "patriot" and "terrorist" are being applied.
After all, with the willingness so many are proudly surrendering your fellow Americans freedoms, the day will come when a patriot will be considered a terrorist.
