Re: The Chicks

Why do you care what they think, Tyme?
That's just it. I don't care what they think.

Re: The Chicks

PW,

Music is an expression. If your expression is nausiating to most of thinking society it isn't a denial of your right to make a living.

This is a denounciation of the message. I am sure the chicks are more than capable of asking if you want fries with your #5. They can make a living in any way they want. Ever wonder why salesmen never wear shirts that support saddam on sales calls? If you don't buy are you denying free speech? NO.

Trying to extend the definition of free speech to include forcing those who don't subscribe to your views to buy records and cheer isn't what free speech is about. Free speech has consequences, and if your message meets with disapproval, sobeit. That is a consequence of free speech.

Booing the chicks and not buying their records is EXACTLY what free speech is about.

Darth, if I call your mama a "ho," will you celebrate that too? It is my right and all....

A lot of us feel insulted by what the Dixie Chits said, the same way you'd be insulted if I actually said something bad your Mother (which, I'm not).

Your analogy is idiotic and way off the mark as it pertains to the statement which was made by Natalie Maines. :(

Re: The Chicks

I missed the anthem if y'all are talking about the race, so I guess I should check TiVo before commenting . . .

BTW, my spin on this kinda stuff, is that I don't look to entertainers for anything political or intelligent. I want them to entertain me. If they do, great!! If they don't, then enough of them. If I was hung up on political messages from entertainers, I would have to blow-off the Beatles, the Stones, the rest of the music from the 60's, 90% of Hollyweird, my favorite LA radio show etc. etc. I don't expect them to get it, so I simply roll my eyes and keep on boogiein'. The only thing idiotic here is your interpretation of my analogy.

Way off the mark? Here's the Natalie quote "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

The analogy is between insulting the president and insulting your mother.

So let me quote myself "A lot of us feel insulted by what the Dixie Chits said, the same way you'd be insulted if I actually said something bad your Mother (which, I'm not)."

Which part of this idiotic analogy can you not grasp?

Not even going to weigh in on this one. I never liked the DC's from the beginning, even before they started jacking their jaw.

Re: The Chicks

RF, i'm not going to argue symantics with you or anyone else, my opinion is as an American one has the right to state their opinions openly anyplace and at anytime regardless of what side of the political spectrum they base their loyalties, one does not always have to agree or disagree with what is said.
To silence one from excercising their right to freedom of speech because yourself and others do not agree with that person is no less an insult to the democratic principles of our country's being.
Thats all that i wish to say on this subject.

Re: The Chicks

Darth, back to my point then. If it's ok for the Chits, would you like it if they were saying bad things about your mother? (Which I am not, just to be clear)

Re: The Chicks

Good for you, Darth!

A democracy is supposed to be a "marketplace of ideas" where everyone gets to put their ideas out there, and the best ones grow, and the worst ones die.

By attempting to stifle dissent (as opposed to presenting a counter argument) it simply goes counter to what this country is supposed to be about.

Not that Natalie Maine's opinion should carry any more or less weight than anyone else's, but to attack their way of life for simply voicing an opinion is wrong.

I don't know much about the Chicks, but I have heard their concerts are still selling out, so at least the attempt to destroy them has not succeeded, which is a good thing.

Natalie used her position of fame to further a political cause. By choosing to do so she accepted ( like she had a choice) the consicences of those of us who disagree with her. Contrary to popular beleif you can do anything you want. I tell my kids this also. Do whatever you want to, just be prepared to pay the price if its not what I wanted.

Re: The Chicks

With the overabundance of liberal thinking in the entertainment industry, the world must think what our 'celebrities' say represent what the man in fly over country thinks. Which we all know is not true. They can't even stay in a committed relationship, why should we take their word on politics.

For the Chicks to do this is bad business as I will not buy any of their music based on this event. Thats my right as a consumer. Same with Barbra, etc......... Part of my draw to country music is its general appeal of family, God, and country. The chicks no longer have that appeal.

Re: The Chicks

It seems that more than a few of the people on this thread think that people in entertainment industry should not have any political opinions. Let me remind you that we had a president, we currently have a governor, and let us not forget Jesse the body. :D He He He I heard that Al Franken has taken up permanent residence in the state of Minnesota also. I Wonder???
