The Drug Problem

The other day, I overheard two old timers discussing that a methamphetamine lab had been found in a old abandon farmhouse in the adjoining county and they asked me a rhetorical question, "Why didn't we have drug problems when you and I were growing up?"

I replied: " I did have a drug problem when I was growing up. I was drug to a House of Worship every week. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather. I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults.

I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me.

I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I muttered a profane word, including "frick'n".

I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flower beds and cockleburs out of dad's fields.

I was drug to the homes of family, friends, and neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood; and if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.

Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.

And we all would be behind bars for child abuse.:|

What SBN said. But you are right, I think it would be a better place if parents could "drug" the kids the way we were.

There is no doubt about it, they would be better off right now, but that is just the way it is and we have to live with it.:'(

Anyone that is out and about see's it.
Let someone spank their child in public. Someone will call the law on them.

Again, that is what's wrong with kids today, they know they can do it and get by with it cause all they have to do is pick the phone up and tell someone they have been abused cause they would not do what they were told.:|

"Anyone that is out and about see's it." Right. It's true because it's true. Everybody knows it. It's a scientific fact. "See it everyday." Course nobody can remember who it is that sees it everyday, or remember the last time they saw it.

We have abuse cases around here, but they are honest to God abuse - slamming a baby's head against a wall, burning with cigarettes, etc.

Re: The

I recall an email I received a long time ago, I wish I could find it, but here is the jist of it:

I need to provide a Home, Food and Clothing for my disobedient and disrespectful child so this is what I have come up with:

Home: Remember your room with the posters and computer? Well I have rented it out. From now on you will sleep on the sofa.

Food: We will be having liver and onions 3 times a week because I like it.

Clothing: I gave away all your clothes. Your Rebooks and Levis are now gone. We will go to the Goodwill to get your clothes.

This will continue until you straighten up.

Love,
Dad

The point is, discipline is gone with today’s youth. Blame the parents, the laws or whatever you wish.

Re: The

What? Who said I never disciplined my children? Discipline and abuse, 2 very different subjects, at least in my mind, and in the eyes of the law. In most or all states, discipline is allowed, abuse is not. The states outline the diff between the two. Cross that line, and the discipline is now abuse. I agree with many, times have changed.

CBC, we were not arguing over our own opinion of right vs wrong regarding discipline. We were discussing right vs. wrong in the eyes of Oregon law. I was arguing from the point of the law, not necessarily my personal opinion. You said what you did was lawful, I said it was not. Again, in the eyes of the law, at least as described by your daughter to them. All ended well, as I remember.

Re: The

Do-gooders call the police all the time around here for "abuse", which almost always turns into someone who was giving their kid a smack on the rump for being a brat. The cell phone has become an excellent tool of the do-gooder...And there has been just enough false alegations of abuse from kids who are pissed at their parents because they wouldn't buy them an X-box to make it very difficult to take anything a kid says seriously any more. Wolf is getting cried way too much...
