I wanted to thank Tom @ Buzzard Bluff and Ed Stoller of www.enginesandmagnets.com for all of the help and support they have provided to the Eska community concerning the Solid State Ignitions, where once I had failed units I now have a working Solid State Ignition and the knowlage to do this very simple repair myself. You can do this yourself and information can be found by joining, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eskaoutboards/

Re: The Eska Files

No need to thank me since I'm the only benefactor of the service to date.:)

Great minds think alike! I wasn't aware that 'mrcrabs' was working on a post at the same time as I was. So he beat me to the punch since there are distinct similarities between glacial movements and my typing skills.

With my typing skills in mind I think I'll just post what I had already written-----

The sheer number of Eskas, Sears Gamefishers and others with bad CDI ignition systems will slap you in the face if you read the archives on this board and others.
To date there has been no easy answer unless a person had access to a parts motor that had a good ignition system on it. The rare NOS parts that did appear were often offered for more than the repaired motor was worth. But 'mrcrabs'--who answers many of the Eska questions on this board and was frustrated by having to be the bearer of bad tidings--set out to find a solution. He contacted electronics Guru Ed Stoller who had already solved the Tecumseh ignition problems on engines for other applications. By this time I had gotten involved in the project as well so when Ed needed a bad ignition system to dissect I sent him one from a 1970 Gamefisher 7 horse in the full expectation that it would be tested to destruction. NOT SO! In a few weeks the repaired system was in my mailbox and I have been testing it in between bouts with a non-functioning waterpump.
The good news---a motor that hadn't ran in years started on the 2nd pull. Once warmed up it starts with a half-hearted pull at idle. An ignition system that puts out enough spark to start at low RPM is good! To be even more exact I just came inside from taking the dog out for his morning duties. While there I uncovered the testank and the Eska started on the first pull at a low idle after sitting all night. Frankly it simply doesn't get much better than that!
Now if I can just whip that cranky waterpump there'll be another Eska taking someone fishing again----me.

Re: The Eska Files

Now just upgrade the Tecumseh coil with an OMC style 18-5193 coil, and you'll be 100% up to date and serviceable! I did that on mine, works great...

Re: The Eska Files

this may help some of you tinkering with those eska ssi's i found this site while looking for parts to build my own ignition for my 15hp ted williams

http://www.siliconchip.com.au/cms/A_110499/article.html

very very helpful for me i was thinking of leaving the trigger coil in place and mounting my new cdi's on the side of the engine. anyways i think the link should be put on the top post.

Re: The Eska Files

Thats is cool,
have you actually done this yet? and have you figured out what caused your 15hp's SSI to fail? and did they both fail at the same time?

This is awesome. I was waiting for that inevitable day when my 1977 15hp Sears Canada ESKA finally gives up the electrical ghost and I would be backwards engineering the darn thing. I don't know where or when you guys popped up, but I am glad you did!!

Waiting on a prop for my bad boy... the cotter pin flew off in THICK weeds and the prop followed soon there after!!

Water pump and prop from www.boatsportandtackle.com BTW!

I don't know how or why this thread is not a sticky. Over the years I have seen a great many posts about this with no happy ending.

This thread just might change that.

Both mrcrabs and myself asked for an Eska sticky for the obvious reason you noted. We were both soundly rebuffed by a site administrator. The decision is curious indeed. But it did result in this thread which we occasionally try to remember to bump to the top. It also resulted in mrcrabs taking the initiative to start the Yahoo/Eska website. It isn't tremendously active but there's a lot of data stored there in the files courtesy of mrcrabs and Ed Stoller the electronic ignition guru. And you can ask a technical question which will be answered at least semi-intelligently.:D

I did join the Yahoo group last night. I, for one, will likely PM the admins as much as possible until this is a sticky.

Were there reasons given why this is not a sticky? It is not like they have to pull out a ladder and climb on their roof in a snow storm naked to do it. It is one button... then its done.

Perhaps they see it as a slippery slope of cluttering up the top of the section?

How is this different from the Top Secret File?!!

Is it because it is not posted by someone with 51k posts?!

This site is awesome. But there is always room for improvement.

Re: The Eska Files

Well I have slowely aquired all of the hard parts for a complete rebuild for my Ted Williams 7.5 Deluxe model 217-5949-0 including a brand new AV 817 NLA piston and pin, I bought another complete outboard that had some damage to the lower unit housing and had been well used, the good thing is that every piece that was missing from my project motor was there on the ebay engine, I paid 20$ and drove 2hrs to meet the guy. Now I'm just making me a gasket list for christmas.

I noticed that Tecumseh switched there piston design on the AV 817 at 640-07 to an offset piston with a thicker skirt, anyone know why or what advantage an offset piston could have on the little motor? I do know that chevys have offset pistons and by turning them the wrong way you get a bit more power so I'm told.

When I get ready to start the rebuild I'm going to try and do some pictures and post them to this thread...I'm hoping to have it ready for spring to use crappie fishing, but I'm slow and methodical so who knows.
