Re: The Most Annoying Sportscaster
Growing up in the 60's-70's in New York City was a great time to listen to baseball on the radio. Bob Murphy was colorful, brilliant and entertaining doing the Met broadcasts. I had my am 9v radio hanging from my bedpost listening to games as I drifted off to sleep. Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Kiner did the TV on local WOR channel 9 and I loved the way they did games.
These days I really do not have any affinity for Mets broadcasters, or any sports commentators since John Madden left. I think because the game is so business oriented, statistical and over-analyzed for me today. I liked it much better when broadcasters painted you a picture and would draw from their experience, and for the most part kept numbers and opinion out of it.
When I travel, I do make a point to try and listen to the local games on radio. Sometimes it can be harken me back if the guy is "old school". Also nowadays you can tune into most any broadcast streamed over the internet. I sometimes locate the opposing teams station to get a different perspective of the game.
One last note, it is my opinion that John Sterling and Susan Waldman who do the Yankee radio in NY on WCBS 880 are just unlistenable. Check them out sometime and see what you think.
