the problem came backkkkkkk

Hi to all. After 5 years of fun boating I have now got a problem with my engine. It runs fine when trolling and not going over 3000rpm but when it comes to running back home it runs for a few minuits and then cuts out completly as if you pulled the safety cord by the key. It would then start at once after I turn the key. We got home on low revs-3500. The possible causes I thought were that the SLOW function was kicking in, cause I felt the tell tail water a bit hot, but is'nt the slow suppose to reduce the revs not completly cut the motor. There are no warning buzzes or lights and all work on startup.
Ive checked the impeller and the thermostat and nothing seems to be blocking the passages. I have also grounded the tan colour wire to check that the warning light works. One thing thats funny is that usually a lot of oil comes out of the propellor when in the garage as I rinse the motor on a winterizing mix every time its used. This time there was no oil whatsoever. Ive checked the carburators clean as a whistle.

One last thing is that before the motor goes off there is a sort of wretchet sound as though the starter is trying to engage. imm baffeled

please help

I'd appreciate any comments keep up the good work.

spark box, computer on it,maybe a coil, or plug wire, but one side of motor running isn't as fast as 3500 rpm on the 35 i had but maybe a 50 faster

Lets start with the basics. Have you done a compression test lately?

sorry Dhadley , I was at work.

No, have never done a compression test the enging is only used occasionally and always winterised.

When I went out the last time I got to top WOT with no problem

The only thing tat might be wrong is the idle mixture as I cant get it perfect

Check your spark when this happens. Take a good timing light with you next time and have someone check each wire when it does this and see if you are droppping a cylinder

I assume the 2000 model has a horn alarm warning system?

If so, grounding out that TAN wire should make the horn sound. And again if so, I'd suspect that the engine is overheating which is engaging the S.L.O.W. system if so equipped..... and that grinding sound is the pistons grabbing the cylinder walls just before seizing up.

Something to consider.

Lube Dude you are right. When he talked about it going into "slow mode" that's what it sounded like but I didn't grasp the rest when it just shuts off and makes the clunk sound.

Tan wire sounds the horn

Engine starts up no problem immidiatly after it shuts down

It goes no problem at 3500rpm but not at 4000+

Warnings are there but none go off

Re: the problem came backkkkkkk

I think I have just found the problem. My oil tank which is situated under the seat was sort of imploded and there was a release of pressure when I opened the cap.I think the small hole in the filler cap was blocked. But the rubber primer ball was not deflated and it was hard as usual?? I think that the pressure was keeping the oil from flowing at high speed. Does this make sence?

The tank did not come back to shape 100% after i opened it. Is it normal for a 6 year old tank to be a bit imploded after contact with oil for so long?

I checked the plugs and one was wet and one was dry. Without doing a compression test can I know if I did any damage?

Thanks for the replies they are greatly appreciated.

Yes,it makes sense. The pump would continue to pump the normal amount of gas, but with a decreasing supply of oil, or no oil at all.

You may want to check with a dealer to see if there is a better cap for your oil tank.

Regardless of other tests, get some oil to those cylinders before you run the engine again. You could take the plugs out and just work a little in from there while turning the flywheel clockwise.

thanks eze, its amasing that such a small thing like a blocked breather can ruin a motor. Ive unblocked the breather, but never have I heard on this forum that there was another problem like mine. Mind you I still have to test to confirm

I'd also suggest that you run pre-mix until you confirm you are really getting oil to the engine.....
