Hey guys I would like to replace my thermastat because I think it's acting up. Do I use the 140deg one for a 2000 mercruiser alpha 1 3.0?

Re: Thermastat 3.0

The issue I have is the Gasket that came with it has three holes for bolts and the housing from what I can see is two bolts

I think it's the water pump. It's,runs at 160 at idle sped when increase to wot and trim up I can only go 1/3 of the way because the the tems rise to 180-190. Can someone tell If have the right water pump kit. 2000 3.0 alpha 1

HAving a 140 degree thermostat only means that it opens at 140. It does nothing to prevent overheating.

And no, that is not the right kit - that is for 1991 and older

What you need is this:

(sorry for the non iboats links, but iboats part search is horrible)

Change the impeller first. If that doesn't fix the temp problem then remove manifold/riser to see if they are plugged with rust. Is this a saltwater boat? [Boynton Beach, FL]

Could be, I use quicksilver/Merc kits

If you want to find all the correct merc part numbers for your boat, then go here, launch the parts catalog and enter your serial number.

I am going to pop into my local westmarine and grab a quicksilver kit. The job seems pretty rough. Putting the gear case back seems like a *****. What I have seen you need to put the drive in forward then align the gear case and shift rod? So confused. I am sure I will break something. I always do

It is easy to do. Put the shifter in forward before you do anything else.

Couple things to remeber:
Don't forget to remove the trim tab - the last bolt for the lower unit is under it.
Don't forget to disconnect the speedo hose - on yours it might be a zip tie or it might be a quick connect
If you can't hold the drive with one hand, it helps to have a helper when you put it back on.

Review the info in this link.... you can also go to youtube and put in "mercruiser impeller" for videos.

Its easier than it looks... just ask lots of questions when you get stumped (or even before)

The speedo is a little hole in front side the gear case. Do I put it in forward before I even start to pull off the the gear case?

The speedo pitot is the hole, but when you have the drive tipped up you will see the rubber hose that connects to the lower unit - that is how the water gets to the speedo. Yes - put it in forward before you do anything else.
