Rain, snow, ice, sunlight (UV) all take their toll. I get the point about the boats with all-glass interiors and self-bailing cockpits. Yup, those're a slightly different animals, however, UV still hurts them.

Whoever owned my boat before me obviously kept it covered. The interior is in nice shape. The seat frames aren't rotted, the vinyl isn't discolored and none of the seams have split from sun-weakened thread. My windshield is clear and unpitted, as are the faces of my gauges.

It came with a cockpit cover and I use it. It's starting to fall apart (pssst-THAT's from the effects of RAIN and SUN), so I'm going to have a new one made. It's cheaper than a new interior. I built a frame so the boat is well protected all winter, as well. No snow, no rain, no ice inside the boat, or lying on the deck, or in the cabin, or in the bilge.

Mine's 10 years old and will still look good 10 years from now.

Most of this discussion is focussed on the neglect of the boat itself. I certainly would not treat a boat of mine that way either.

But how about the engine and other parts with water in them? Even if the water the boat is sitting in is not frozen, all it would take to crack the block and various other parts is a cold snap. It seems unlikely that the boat has a closed circulation cooling system.

Maybe the owner has more green matter than grey matter.

indeed a not so smart thing to do.... but maybe something happened to the guy... or he died and is ex wife doesnt care about the boat that in his name.....

Or he won the lottery and has 100 mil... and can afford to do whatever he wants.

Even with 100 mil, I wouldn't lose perspective of how to keep my assets valuable, be it a $5K bayliner or a $200K Cobalt.

I can't understand how anyone would leave a boat uncovered for any amount of time when left unattended. I don't cover my boat when it's in the covered dock while I'm at the lakehouse; but once I leave for home, the cover goes back on. A snap-on type cover (mooring cover) would be perfect for those who moor their boats, and would likely hold up to all but the worst winds. People just don't know how to protect/care for their valuables anymore.

Slightly off the subject, but ever since I found this forum, and then bought a boat, wayyyyy back in...oh...October?...I look at all the boats I pass in the neighborhoods I drive through. If 1 in 5 are covered, that'd be amazing. Huge boats sit in the trees with no cover. Little boats in folks driveways. Everynow and then you see a boat that's tipped up at the nose with a tarp over it, but those are rare.

I just don't get it.

agree'd w/ above.

what kills me is going by either one of the two dealers in my area. in there outside storage areas, both have most drives full up... + no covers on some (many do have covers though).
i'd sure be bummed out if i had my boat stored there and found it that way in dead of winter with snow on the ground for the last almost 2 months..

as for the original pic. better his boat than mine.... buyer beware...

A cover certainly is a good idea; a garage or boat house is even better. For off season storage, even one of those cheap, portable shelters would be better than nothing.

Looked after properly, a twenty or thirty year old boat can still look much like new. It's not just about preserving the value of a boat. A well cared for boat just looks and works better.

All those boats sitting outside uncovered are fine to most folks because after all "BOATS ARE MADE TO GET WET".



Big local dealer here stores a bunch outside some with good covers some with bad covers. Local large boat marinas store a ton of big cruisers outside most all of those are shrink wrapped.
Mine is sitting inside a nice pole barn with about 25 other friendly boats. sadly I do let mine sit uncovered in my driveway all summer and it gets rained in pretty good sometimes. I could store it inside at Dads or Grandmas but I hate having to drive 15 miles each way in order to get my boat. I'm 3 blocks from the boat launch here, I gotta go.

Well it does look like there is an extension cord running into the boat so maybe there is a heater in the engine comp. But like most are saying, very sad to see something that nice treated so bad. I guess it isn't much worse than seeing some of the cars that I would give lots to own and are banged up and never fixed. Some people just don't care or don't know. Best of luck to who ever owns that boat.

Man that made my heart sink seeing all that snow accumulating in the boat. If you care for your boat it needs to be covered in some form or fashion. Sun and moisture will destroy everything eventually including fiberglass!!

There's a BRAND NEW Tahoe that's been sitting outside my local BassPro for at least 6 months in similar condition. Figure that one out. Definitely not one of those "made to be rained on" boats.

We are supposed to get up to 2 more feet overnight and into tomorrow. I will be at the marina Thursday, I'll take another pic if it hasn't sunk by then, snow is heavy!

I am one of the fortunate ones who has a boat that can be left uncovered. It's welded aluminum with a hard top and out board motors and a self bailing cockpit.

I store mine on a trailer in my back yard, but if I did leave it in a slip, I would definitely take the time to check on it after a storm.

I'd expect to see that Bayliner on CL soon with a "Needs a little TLC" ad.

There are more owners that treat their boats that way then those who don't. I can count a dozen on my street that are kept uncovered year round. They just dump them in and hope for the best each year. A few are well waterlogged and it's amazing they still float but they keep running them till they die.

Those of us who take good care of our boats are in the minority it seems. Even if your boat is well protected from water damage, freezing is another problem. I've seen damage done by frozen water in between the ribs of an aluminum boat and hulls or decks split open by expanding slush that froze overnight on a boat that was left snow covered.
