WoW, I worked hard for a long time to buy a boat and made repairs done maintenance on it to enjoy the time we ( my family and I ) get to spend relaxing. The labor is worth the rewards.
It would appear that this is someone who doesn't or hasn't worked hard enough to appreciate the fruits of their labors, or they got ill and had no-one to take care of it for them. Come Spring you ought to ask them why they left it in such a state. I'm sure we would all like to hear the reason they did such a heinous thing. If it's the latter they have my sympathy.

Carelessness and stupidity abound everywhere.

I drove up and back to Cleveland earlier this week. Took the back roads to and from. Rt. 14, Rt. 30, Rt. 70 etc, down thru Steubenville, Wheeling, Morgantown, etc. The number of boats I saw sitting in people?s yards uncovered and full of snow easily numbered over 100. Saw quite a few where the traps collapsed under the weigh of the snow as well.

I just don't understand what's so hard about putting a tarp on a boat or building a support for it so it don't cave in?
I can see where snow can accumulate on a boat's tarp and cave it in, but how hard is it to clean it off an remedy the situation?

I've got a neighbor who bought two mint older boats about three years ago, started to work on them, pulled the old motors off and now has just let them sit uncovered. They are both completely filled with snow and slush, they've never had any tarps on them and the one now appears to be collapsing on the trailer from the weight of the snow. Either the hull gave out or the trailer bunks rotted away.
I keep telling him he needs to cover them but he insists that 'Any good boat doesn't need covering, they have drains", and there's no telling him otherwise. He's also the type to keep adding new deck plywood over top of the rotted out stuff every so many years. But what bothers me most is that these two he's got now were super nice boats, now they look like total wrecks. To make it worse they sit under trees with sap dripping and leaves falling all year long. The one lost it's windshield to a tree branch last spring.

People have no idea how much weight 2 or 3' of snow adds to the boat or trailer.

Problem is people have different values when it comes to inanimate objects depending on their investment and their interests.

Case in Point.
How many of you let your car sit out in the drive all year long? You talk to a car enthusiast and he'll tell say your a fool for keeping a car out in the elements. Most have a lot more money tied up in cars than they do in a boat so why not protect your investment? How hard is it to put a cover on your car when not in use or build a simple poll hut next to the house to protect it from the weather?

Apples to oranges man, a car's exterior and paint are made to be out in the elements, why else do they have seals and weatherstripping? Now a convertible with the top left down would be a more fitting comparison.

Why the garage? Thought they where made to sit out in the weather? They have weatherstripping and seals don't they?

Cars are made to sit out and boats are made to get wet. What's the diffferance between trashing a cars paint job and interoir with heat and UV and trashing a boat's interior from wetness?

My gosh it's only snow, I agree if it were mine it would at least be covered but I've seen it year after year right here in my own neighborhood only difference is the boats aren't even in slip, just sitting in backyards on trailers and full of snow, but they seem to survive. One year I had a boat full of ice from the combination of a leaking cover and freeze thaw cycles, I still use that boat today.
Some people are just happy go lucky (very lucky) and don't sweat the little stuff.

I agree totally. Most cars are disposable metal and plastic; we drive them daily and by the time the paint fades they have lots of miles on them and are ready for the crusher. Nice cars - collectible older or newer cars - are a different matter. They are works of art and need TLC and garages.

Boats are similar. If one has a quality boat, there is no reason why it should not look great after twenty or thirty years if looked after.

I get exactly what dingbat is saying and agree completely and as a car enthusiast I cant believe how many nice new cars that cost a person 50g's and they are driving em in snow and salt, using rough touch car washes to clean em and just generally junkin em up. Consumerism makes it work I guess.
I'll keep using a deflated winter beater SUV I mean a decent vehicle but not a money waste.

If it was my 03 Cobra or boat to sit outside for the winter, I'm sorry boat.

Was at the marina this morning and got my rig all cleaned off. The Bayliner still hasn't been touched. I did, however, check the circuit breaker that his extension cord is running to (it was not tripped).
I took this one from the bow of my boat about 2 hours ago. Doesn't even look like a bowrider.
Sittin' a little low IMO.

Oh, and CHECK OUT the huge piles of snow in the background. This is Maryland, not Minnesota! Geez, enough already....and there's more in the forecast for Monday night!

My MIL has this exact boat and I have seen some interesting stuff with that one. Once, a drain plug on the motor was left open and the whole bilge and ski locker filled with water and she did not notice it until water was all over the floor. Opened up the doghouse and water was spraying everywhere from the flywheel. She treats it like a car. Get in it and drive. NO maint. She will run it until it dies though and then go buy a new one. I guess the way she sees it, she can spend 15K every 15 years or so instead if paying someone for the constant upkeep on the one she has. Course she is in no condition to be out wrenching on a boat, but it is her money I guess, to each his own. To some people a boat is a disposable item that is replaced like a car every few years.

Yeah, it upsets me BUT No freakin' way I'd do that to a strangers boat!!
Too may potential problems- if the owner found out someone went aboard he could say something was missing or damaged. GUESS WHO would be liable?
The only time I would EVER board a strangers boat would be to directly prevent it from sinking.
I've already done it to THAT boat once last year. It was sitting low in the water (summertime) and I heard his bilge pump working but no water was being discharged. Turns out the bilge pump somehow got knocked out of its base and was lying on its side, not pumping. There was about 12" water in the bilge at the time. I snapped it in place and it started working.
Hmmm....some of you guys might be right- maybe he really WANTS it to go down.
Guess I gotta stop caring so much about other peoples stuff.

I just don't understand, I cover my boat or put in the garage..when it started to snow. I put my boat in the garage. I have put to much sweat, blood, money and elbow grease in my boat for me to leave it outside. What was this guy smoking because apparently he wasn't thinking!!

Sometimes my wife tells that I spend more time with the boat than I do with her..."she said it jokingly", but I have to agree with alot of members here. You worked on it, spent hard earned money on it, so why treat a boat like something you can just replace so easingly when you can't!?!?!?
