Re: This is so hard...

I just seen this thread tonight, and I feel and felt your pain about What to do. Had the same thing happen with my black kitty (Just can't call them cats) about 6 or 7 years ago. Got ahold of the vet on a beautiful warm sunny Sunday in Ketchikan, Alaska and he likes to boat and fish. She is now almost 16 years old. Serious hunger for string. Only cost a grand back then but it wasn't even a question of yes or no. She was and still is part of this family.

And I do remember the thread where you were eating kitties ears !

That's great news Nandy! I am so glad Mai is doing OK. I thought I might be the only guy on the earth that likes cats (all animals). Nice to hear there are others.

Glad it's worked out for you and your family. BTW, I'm a cat person also. Lost our last dog before the kids were grown. It was a similar situation to yours. She developed a tumor in her abdomen. I don't remember the exact amount, but the vet wanted several hundred to operate to try to save her. Mostly because of the kids I agreed. Three days later I walked out of the vets owing them the several hundred with a dead dog in a box. We have our 3rd cat now. First one lived 16 years, second lived 19 years and the one I have now is 3.

I know it's a lot of money and it hurts, but not paying would have hurt much, much more. Watch her close at Christmas - prime time for ribbons.

Re: This is so hard...

As a fellow member of the $1,000+ cat club, I'm glad to hear the good news!

In another thread here, there are a bunch of pics of dogs and cats sleeping in funny places and positions. One is of a cat sleeping inside of the hoops of a bunch of clothes hangars. All I can say is, don't let you cat do that - one of mine did, fell out of them and broke her right thigh bone at the ball that fits into the hip socket.

The break was so bad that the end of the bone snapped completely. That meant that the only way to fix it was to insert a pin and then remove it after the bone healed. The surgery was tricky because a cat's thigh bone isn't very large. She also had to be confined to a small cage for two months, because this type of break can't be held in place with a cast, at least not on a cat. Since I was single at the time and extremely busy in my professional life, this meant boarding her at the vet's for the entire time.

I don't completely remember what the final bill was but it was two surgeries, two months of boarding and misc. other stuff. I seem to remember the cost to be about $1,500! The good news is that she is now 15 years old and is still with me. The leg healed fine and she has had many great years. She is probably sleeping up on the hood of one of the OMC motors in my shop right now!

Re: This is so hard...

My daughter is 16. She was shocked to hear the tab but she is happy. She is supposed to visit Mai today and we are bringing Mai back on Sunday. We are framing the ribbon ;) The house has been swept of any string like objects. My studio is next, I need to pick all of my fly tying stuff.
Again thanks for your support.

Glad everything workded out.

16... that's old enough to get a job to pay the tab... :D

Good news, but it is absolutely ridiculous for a vet to charge that much for a surgery like that, on a cat.

I've paid a lot less for a more complicated surgery on a very exotic animal.

Some of these vets are just as bad as ambulance chasers.

I am glad to hear she will be OK. Sounds like the vet basically performed a Heimlich maneuver for $2000. Ask her for a discount. The worst she can do is say "No." Ask the vet, not one of the staff.

I don't find the fee unreasonable at all. Overhead is a killer. Not only is the rent included, but all of the equipment, the insurance, the cost of good help, the post operative care, the cost of paying off student loans, etc. The specie dosn't make a difference. Just think of what it woud be if it were Nandy's daughter. I gues I know too many veterinarians and what it cost them to stay in business.

Hey Nandy: I've been wondering this last day; can you take it off of your taxes by saying you were paying for a ribbon cutting ceremony?:D

The joke at the end was hillarious, but I wanted to add that you're also paying for the vet to do all the charity work they do. Most vets (at least around here) do almost a third of their work for charity, but that charity work still adds to their overhead.

Vet's charge a lot, but I've never met a rich one.

Re: This is so hard...

We have a dog, and I've found vets to be very expensive as well, but I know they do a lot of things for no charge and they are generally nice people. So I'm not going to complain.
