This is so hard...

Just got word that our cat is in need of surgery or we will have to put it to sleep. The surgery is $2000.00 and I don't have those funds especially when I have to pay a couple thousands to the IRS. The vet will make me a payment arrangement but they need $1000.00 which I still cant afford to pay without putting us in an economic bind. I scrambled a few hundred and lets see what they say... This sucks big time. I wont lie and say I don't care about the cat. That little kitty found a way to get to me. But my daughter is not going to take it well. It was her first pet, being with us a little over 2 years...
Wish us good luck. Maybe the vet will take that money. I understand they need the money, it is a business after all.

later...

The only thing I can think to say is good luck, that is a bummer any way you look at it.

Re: This is so hard...

Friends and family may help you through. Or Tiger kitty swallowed a needle a month ago and the bill started out the same.

God was gracious in that they managed to get the needle out by endoscopy instead of full blown surgery. My wife was beside herself as I was on a trip and could not help her with financial descisions. Life would be a lot quieter without the little tank underfoot.

Be honest with those around you as to your financial obligations. It's written that it is better to give than receive, but no one can give if no one will receive. Give someone else the opportunity to be blessed in giving. Ask quickly, your daughter and your cat need this grace.

May your needs be met soon.

They wont take anything under 1k. We will manage to come up with the money after some creative economics (read credit and more debt) but now the vet says it could be cancer and there is no way for them to tell until they do the surgery. So I am SOL. My daughter is all acrying as she should be. I remember now why I did not want a pet in the house... I gong back under my rock.

Re: This is so hard...

Thanks everyone for the kind words... The problem is the vet dont know if it is cancer or not. I should have explain the situation better. Mai has not been eating well in the past 2 days and started vomiting. We had some friends kids over and Mai does not like strangers so she hides and gets all nervous. So we thought she was doing all this due to her nervousness. In the past she waits until is late at night and then goes out of hideout to eat and roam the house. She did not eat much the night before last night and nothing last night. That is when we thought it could be more than just a scary cat. The vet took x-rays and found the cat has an obstruction in the intestines. They cannot use an endoscopy instrument to look at it. They cannot tell why is the obstruction there. If it is a "normal" obstruction the cat should be ok after surgery (the money cover surgery and post surgery). Is the obstruction is due to cancer then the story is different. That is the catch 22, do I spend the money in a otherwise healthy cat that can have a normal life after surgery or do I spend the money in a cat that is doomed anyway... Unless the vet can tell me the chance for the cat to have cancer is way higher that just be a "normal" obstruction I rather go with the surgery.

Re: This is so hard...

Just got a call. We are going thru with the surgery. The doctor says the chances for cancer are minimum and she believes the overwhelming chances are than this is an obstruction due to a foreign object. The kitty loves to play with my fly tying stuff. I dont let her in my studio for that reason but maybe she managed to slip by unnoticed. It will kill me to know the problem was due to my fishing stuff.

Good luck Nandy. May it be something "simple".

I know that both the wife's actions and mine are changed here. We were surprized at how many things that a cat can and will put into it's mouth that were laying about at our place. Our Tiger is an inside special needs (read retarded) cat that was slept on when he was a kitten. He just wants to play with anything smaller than his 20 pounds and if it gets into his mouth he will swallow it.

This was new to the both of us and we have had cats most of our lives. It has changed how we view our place.

Peace be to you and yours

Try bartering with her. Offer to take the Vet out fishing for partial payment. Maybe she will knock off quite a bit.

I hope it turns out well. The problem is that it isn't just a cat, it is part of the family.

Would that be... catfishing? :D

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I hope it turns out well. I know it killed me to put my cat up for adoption after my wife became allergic.

Re: This is so hard...

You too aint right! LOL! Mai came thru surgery fine. The obstruction was due to a ribbon she ate. I think it a ribbon we use to drag in the carpet and she will attack it viciously!biggrin: Anyway, that is some expensive ribbon. We will have a sweep and get rid of anything she can swallow now. Best news, no cancer!
Thanks to everyone for their support!

Re: This is so hard...

After hearing this costly story I didnt quite feel as bad when I went to pick up the wifes little kitty from the vet today and the bill was 137.50....still smarted a little though. I asked her before I left in fun how much the bill had to be for me to leave the cat and she said. "You can stay but you better bring my cat home" gez ....after what I spend on boat stuff I figured Im still way ahead.

Good for you and your family. Pets have been a huge part of my life and now my kids life. You can never put a price on the happiness they bring you. I didnt even need to finish reading to know you were gonna go through with the surgery, thats just the way it is. you did the right thing.

Cool Nandy! God loves little critters too! Buy Mai Fisher Price toys from now on. They guarantee that small parts will not come off and be eaten!:D

Re: This is so hard...

My daughter is 16. She was shocked to hear the tab but she is happy. She is supposed to visit Mai today and we are bringing Mai back on Sunday. We are framing the ribbon ;) The house has been swept of any string like objects. My studio is next, I need to pick all of my fly tying stuff.
Again thanks for your support.

LOL! This is an strictly inside cat. Actually, you can leave the front door open and she will not even get close to it!
