Three New Powerheads on Yamaha 250 In 140 Hours?

Doesn't this seem unreasonable and what should I do? I have a 2001 31 Contender center console with twin 250 Fuel Injection Saltwater Series II engines. The powerhead on the starboard engine has been replace three times in the last 140 hours and I have lost faith in this engine to get me safely between south Florida and the out islands of the Bahamas. All three times Yamaha has done the repairs at no cost to me. However, my family has lost faith in this motor and no longer feels safe in our travels to the Bahamas. Two times I have lost prepaid house rentals, have had to fly 4 of my family home to reduce weight in the boat, had to put additional strain and wear on the remaining engine to make it back to Florida, lost vacation time with my family, and put my wife through some real mental anguish. My questions to knowledgeable boaters are 1) Is having 3 new powerheads in 140 hours normal? 2) What should I expect from Yamaha? 3) Has anyone had a similar problem and what was the solution. I have asked Yamaha to sell me two new engines at their cost and help me sell my two engines and I would pay the difference. Does this sound like a fair solution? Thanks.

Tell us more about what happens to the powerhead to require replacement. Is the motor capable of the correct top RPM's or is it being lugged? Is the damage in the wrist pin area?

Feel free to e-mail me at dhadley@aol.com if you like.

Good luck!

Hello Sundawg,
Going through 3 powerheads in about 6 days running time is beyond ridiculous.
Yamaha is getting you on the water again, but they obviously are not addressing the REAL problem.I would look for a lack of lubrication and or cooling problem on that motor.Pumping water? Is oil injection pump working?
Other than that, there may be some other internal mechanical damage causing failure of the powerheads...Does the other motor have the same hours?Running at or near Full Throttle does put alot of strain on any outboard especially on long runs out and require higher/more frequent maintenance...

G'Day. Tha fact that you are running twins is interesting, maybe you are getting water spraying from the port motor into the air intake of the stbd motor, it would not be the first time that has happened. The dealer that set the motors up should test for this problem.

9 times out of 10, multiple powerhead failures are caused by the boat's fuel system problems. Did the dealer run the vacuum check on the boats fuel system per Yamaha's manual? What was the highest reading? Did he also use a clear fuel line to see if there were any air bubbles in the lines, signifying a leak somewhere?

Was the oil tank checked for water or sludge in the bottom? Did the engine mounted oil tank have the filter seal squished down in the oil outlet restricting the flow?

What exactly failed on each motor? Was it the same cylinders each time?

Are there any transducers, thru hull fittings, etc. within 17" of the engine centerline? Does the water pressure vary on that motor in a turn, and the other motor stays steady?

Have you spoken to anyone at Yamaha directly, and expressed the same concerns that you have here? After warrantying three powerheads most companies would have a district service manager knocking on your door and breathing down that dealers neck to find out what's up .You have made a substansial investment in this companies product and it is failing you.If the dealer that reaped the benifits of that sale can't help you then Yamaha certainly needs to be more involved. All the previous posts are valid and all point to problems with rigging. How much experiance did that dealer have with this complex and long range rigging job?

Like already posted that is beyond ridiculous. Did they replace the powerhead or just repair the old ones? They should have been able to identify what happened. There are too many variables to guess from out here in pc land.

It is also ridiculous for you to buy another engine...even at dealer cost. I would contact the Yamaha regional warranty mgr and have a sit down conference about it. Ask him to personally check the rig and engine. Find out if he checked the old engine or just left it to the dealer. If you must, get a lawyer. Let us know what happens.
