Hello, I have a 2007 Mariah ES18 and would liketo mount a thru hull transducer. Do these transducers get drilled thru the botton of the hull or the transom????

Re: Thru hull transduser

I believe that a thru the hull transducer would either be mounted in a hole drilled through the bottpm Ihull) or epoxied to the hull on the inside. This is instead of mounting a transom mounted transducer. I just installed a lowrance HDS-7 on my boat this past week using a transom mount on a bracket screwed to the transom. The transom mount came with the unit. A thru the hull would have been several hundred dollars extra.

The through hull transducer would be attached inside the bottom of the hull using the recommended epoxy.

The other piece of info is that depending on your unit, the through hull can be free. I purchased a Humminbird and could send the transom mount back for exchange for a through hull (300 series FF/GPS) I'm sure it doesn't apply to all but worth checking before you shell out $$$ to swap it (again, depends on the unit and assuming you have a new FF you're dealing with)

We seem to have some confusion with nomenclature. Assuming Airmar (the leader in transducer manufacture) has it right, the correct names for each type of transducer are:

Through Hull transducers are installed by cutting a hole in the hull and inserting the transducer in the hole. These can be a one time install, although more sophisticated units are multi-piece where there is a collar that is mounted permanently to the hull and the transducer is then mounted in the collar. This allows the transducer to be removed.

In hull transducers are glued to the inside surface of the hull. This may, or may not be an epoxy.

Transom mount transducers are installed on the exterior of the transom.

The type of transducer you use is a function of boat and engine construction, and the job at hand. For example, in hull transducers can have problems if you try to use them on a cored hull.

Also keep in mind that you have to buy a transducer that matches the deadrise of the hull where you want to install it (so it will shoot straight down).

Sorry, you're correct. In fact I double checked. Humminbird calls it 'Shoot thru hull' and not 'in hull' as you've stated.

In the bottom of the hull. They must point straight down.
