Re: ticking nosie

If the cap & rotor were recently replaced, check the sensor wheel bolted to the bottom of the rotor, if a tab is bent outward it can contact the sensor & tick like you described.

Re: ticking nosie

I think we need more info.
Why did the lifters collapse
How long was it run in order to pound the valve train to death
What was the original problem? and how was it resolved?
DID it lose oil pressure????

Re: ticking nosie

i do not know just how long since i had just bought the boat and found the bent push rods, oil pressure is fine holding a study 40 lbs, some one had rebuilt the motor before i got it and i dont know who that was. the reason i got the boat cheap was the guy thought it had a rod knock which it didnt, i dont know what he replaced and i have to assume that the lifters where the original to the engine, i have had lifters go bad before for no apperant reason, if you look back you will see that i replaced the upper drive train inculding the valves is how is was fixed, mine has points, and yes i did check for rub marks inside it.

Re: ticking nosie

Run the engine at night in the Dark. Check the distributor cap and wires for for sparking. It might even be a spark plug wire on the side or near the plugs. If they are arching even a little bit it will make a ticking noise. But it must be dark to see it arch. if you see sparking. take a little Vaseline and rub it on the wire with the motor shut off of course. :D If the ticking stops you will know it. The Vaseline will last a while but you will be doing a tune up soon.

Wuss, just start grabbing wires; you will find the bad one.
If one is bad, all are probably old.

Re: ticking nosie

A friend had a ticking noise in his car engine after he ran off the end of the 1/4 mile track and ran over a trailer. He took it out and rebuilt it and it still had a funny click noise on the stand. We turned it over and saw the oil pan moving ever so slightly where a connecting rod bolt would bump it. The dent in the pan was all but invisible, but it was deformed. He just took it off and we reformed it on his bench and Voila good quiet engine.

If the guy before you had the engine out it could be something like that, rough handling, bumping something on the way back in the boat, who knows. And it sounds like he really was not a good one to be rebuilding an engine.

With my friend's ordeal, it turns out he probably could have just driven it without problems for a while and not had to do the rebuild. With yours I think I would figure out how to not let it bother me if there are no noticeable symptoms other than noise. My brother's 1974 4 cylinder Merc was just plain loud, we just turned the radio up!

Re: ticking nosie

nobody yet has stated the obvious....
you NEED you get a mechanic's stethoscope.... or a big old screw driver, and isolate the noise in question...
that's it...

If it ran with no oil pressure; a bad wrist pin can make that noise.

no thud of a main, no knock of a rod quieting when load is off

Well I did but............. it got lost when someone gave me hell about
my upside down valve cover description.

Alot easier to focus on the mistake, than the little bit I might have helped.

had that thought too, but when it was rebuilt the guy installed new pistons that i can tell because they are 30 over and not stock, new pistons comes with new pins, however i can only assume and hope that he put the new pins in, there is no sign on being run without oil since i had the head off block looked great, the nosie stops when load is on, only does it at idle.
