tiller/linkage adjustment

I have a 87 johnson 20hp/tiller that I'm trying to do the lynch&synch procedure on.I have the Clymer manual and just got the Johnson manual.I adjusted the cam follower pickup point so that the butterfly just starts to open when the cam follower is between the 2 marks on the cam.The next step is the throttle control rod adjustment. It says to advance the throttle lever until it contacts its stop on the engine block. My lever doesn't hit the stop. The cam does contact the rubber stop(where you adjust the WOT timing)and that stops the lever from advancing any further. Is this right?Should I just adjust the control rod to allow the butterfly to open up to the level position?

Dave, did you shift into forward first? The linkages won't allow WOT if the gear shift is NOT in forward.

Re: tiller/linkage adjustment

yeah,i put it in forward.I'm thinking that its just the way the linkage is setup on the tiller version.Because the cam under the flywheel still advances all the way around and touches the WOT rubber stop. Its just the throttle lever doesn't hit the stop on the engine block.I've had the engine for over a year now and it has always seemed to reach WOT.I just rebuilt the carbs and thats why I'm trying to do the procedure. thanks for taking the time to help

I adjusted the control rod to allow the butterfly to open to the horizontal position, tested this weekend and motor ran fine,no coughing,no hesitation,so i guess its right. Now,I just need to get a timing light to set WOT timing.

Re: tiller/linkage adjustment

Finally,I figured it out.A few weeks ago,i was twisting the throttle on the tiller and it binded up.I ended up having to replace the throttle cable and the kill switch at the end of the tiller. After installing the new cable, the throttle lever will now touch the stop on the engine block.Re-did the lynch-n-synch procedure and got to test it out today. It was like having a new engine, throttle response was excellent and it peaked out at 5100RPM.
