Re: tiller to controls conversion
Good luck, DMP! I posted a similar question about 7 months ago, and sent
out a few emails to vendors asking the same, and did not receive a single
response. Tashasdaddy is very generous to share pictures of his own
designed controls, and they are very helpful for ideas.
To your question, in the picture of his motor he attached a custom made
bracket to the motor carry mount, and that is where he attached the swivel
control mount for the steering control. I suppose a piece of angle iron would work the same,
after it is securely attached to the carry mount and drilled with a mounting hole.
I did talk to a motor mechanic once about conversion, and the gist of the
conversion of controls is that there is some liability involved for do-it-yourself
types of conversions. If something goes wrong with the shifting and throttle
controls while you are boating, you are in trouble big time! Nobody has written
a do it yourself guide to convert boat motor controls, and that's probably why. The reality of the situation is that motor mechanics do have a significant
amount of knowledge, and hopefully experience, to ensure a quality and
functional conversion, if they do it. It's much more complex than changing a
spark plug.
I gave up on the conversion, for now, anyway. Most throttle and shifting
controls are brand specific, and that means you need controls to match your
motor. Maybe they can be found in "boat bone yards", or from a marine dealer.
Knowledge transfer does not always come easy. Again, good luck!
