Hope this is the correct forum for this..

I am searching for an outboard for my retirement project boat. It's been many years since I've even yanked on a starter cord. My boat is set up for remote steering. I remember as a kid seeing tiller motors hooked up to cables for remote steering.

My question: in the 20-35 hp range, can't you still hook up a tiller motor to remote steering cables with some minor modification ? Does the throttle configuration on a tiller prevent this ?

I'm seeing better prices for tiller models than remote models for comparable engines.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Thanks...

they all can be converted, but the year and the motor, determines how much the conversion cost, and requires. the main thing you want is a tilt tube to connect steering. the rest is fairly inexpensive, if no tilt tube, you have to have a transom conversion kit which adds about $200 to cost of steering. or you have to go with the old cable pulley system, which good helms are really hard to find. i've done the all.

Re: Tiller to Remote

The higher price for Remote models is because of the cost of the electric start bits (if electric), plus the control box.

Most new motors will not mate correctly to ancient controls, so depending on the vintage of your controls, you need to replace the control box anyway. Or. if you find a proper vintage motor, it will connect to the motor correctly.

Do you need electric start as well? Most current remote electric OB's do not have tillers.

Re: Tiller to Remote

Thanks TD & PV:

I have a 1988 Gregor alum with an OMC control box and steering. The steering seems to respond just fine so I would like to keep that just to keep costs down. The control box needs to go as there is no ignition key and it's a one handle spring loaded type. I don't care for the one handle anyhow, so no great loss. The box is a bit beat up also.

Electric Start ? Oh yeah, hell yes. I promised myself when I retired there would be no more pull ropes to deal with. With the exception of my weed wacker; I've kept that promise to myself. Life is much easier with the push of a button and the extra cost of elect start is just fine with me. Life is so much nicer with the push of a button. ;)

This boat was a freebie from a friend so everything I spend on it is an out-of -budget expense. This be why I'm taking my time researching and hopefully not buy any "mistakes".

Many Tahnks, I really appreciate your guidance.

if you buy a motor the controls and wiring harness should come with it.

This is what I'm hoping for, but with both Craigs and eBay I see many adds that don't mention controls whereas some specifically mention it in the add. That would be one of the "right questions" yes ? Yes..... ;)

TD: Getting ready to post in the rebuild/repair section. I started some serious hull cleaning today. :)

You wouldn't have to have controls with a starter switch, you could put that anywhere. Mines on a 'L' shaped bracket near the control. Put a ignition switch on the dash, like a car.
