tilt/trim help please

I'm not sure this is the right area for this but i'm hoping for some help. I am working on a Nitro for a friend of mine and i'm stumped. It has a 2004 200 hp Mercury outboard salt water edition serial # OT816596 and the trim/tilt has quit working. The system works fine both up and down when wired direct to the pump. My problem is this outboard has 3 solenoids (and i'm not counting the starter solenoid) the 3 solenoids are of the 5 pin relay type and are located just inside the lower cowl on the starboard side. I have tried new relays to no avail, and I haven't been able to find a schematic that shows the third solenoid only schematics i've found all show 2 solenoids "up" and "down". Is anyone familiar with this setup? What is the function of the third solenoid? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. The pump is the 2 wire type needing to switch polarity + and - to the pump leads for up or down. TIA

Re: tilt/trim help please

Two wire PTT motors need relays. Relays act as single pole double throw switches. When not energized, they connect ground to the PTT motor. Solenoids are like single pole single throw switches. When not energized, they are open.

Not sure about the third solenoid.

Sounds like the wiring is suspect...

Re: tilt/trim help please

sounds like a blown circuit breaker. if not that, then check the ground wires going into relays. if not that then make sure console switch has 12V in and out. then make sure the switch output is reaching the relay control wire.

Re: tilt/trim help please

The third relay is probably the main relay. The two relays work in conjunction with one another one provinding 12+ and the other providing ground. You know the pump works, check to see if you have 12 volt positive (the red) at each relay connection if not follow the red wire back to the starter solenoid check connection there. Also check the ground on each relay connection (black). I would disconnect the two leads from the pump, energize the trim "up" should have 12v+ to the blue and ground to the green and vice versa.

Re: tilt/trim help please

Thanks for the reply. This is the first reference I've seen to the third (main) relay. Do you know what the function of this main relay is? I am tracing wires now. May I ask where you found this diagram I looked and searched for days and didn't find anything like this.

Re: tilt/trim help please

if you look at the diagram above, you can see that the third relay is not related to trim.
the two red wires need to be constant hot
the two black wires need to be solid ground
the blue and green wire go to trim motor. blue goes hot for up and green goes hot for down.
the two smaller grn/wht and bluw/wht are low amperage control from the trim switch.

Re: tilt/trim help please

Reply to all. Just an update. Got it fixed, all the suggestions were appreciated and helpful especially the diagram. When I first got into this, I got some bad advice from a very smart and good friend mercury mechanic, who told me all 5 pin relays were created equal, as all of you probably already know that is not true. Rewired, got the correct relays, and now all is good in mercury trim/tilt land. Thanks again to all.
