Ok guys, see if you can help me.

I was running around in the flats all day Sunday, using tilt/trim everywhere to get me on a plane and to run shallow. It worked great, no problems at all.

We get out of the water on Sunday, take the boat to the carwash first thing (like always), and rinse the crap out of everything to remove the salt and to clean it a bit.

I go to tilt the engine up (I tow in the down position), and it barely moves, about 10times slower then usual. It sounds like it is working just fine, but the engine barely lifts at all.

So, first thing I do is turn on all of the boat lights, the depthfinder, the bilge pump, and the livewell pump to see if I have enough power in the battery. I then crank the engine and it cranks just fine (i had it on muffs at the carwash to rinse the salt out of it). So, I let the engine run, and the battery clearly had power. I still can't get the engine to raise. I go to lower it, and it BARELY moves...but sounds like it is moving fine.

So, I take a peak at the t/t cylinders, they are as clean as can be. No obvious corrosion, nothing bad looking at all.

I glance over the wiring, try the switch on the engine itself, in lieu of the binnacle switch, same thing.

Any ideas what to do here? It sounds like it is working, has plenty of juice going to it, but nothing. It moved about 1", 2 times, but nothing at all now.

let me know if you have any ideas!

Thanks
Shawn

Walker,

I was looking at it all night last night and couldn't find a damn fluid fill hole.

I also couldn't find a manual release (my nissan had one).

Let me know where to look and I'll head out there later and check it.

Thanks
Shawn

The manual release will be on the side of the motor mounting bracket, about midway down the midsection. Look for a hole through the bracket. Fluid check and fill will be on your reservoir.
On a fastrak , which is probably what your's is the manual release is on the port side. Lift the motor and up under ther you will have T&T pump on the port side and the reservoir on the starboard side. Probably a rubber looking deal with a screw in the middle of it on the reservoir looking right at you.

Walker,

I opened the plug and heard a lot of air, and I also noticed that I had a little bit of fluid coming out of the seal between the piston and the cylinder on the MAIN piston (the one in the middle). It was not a whole lot, and I sprayed a lot of water on them last night so it could just be from water being sprayed on them directly with a lot of pressure.

I assume I will try to refill the fluid (looks like it might be low), and then go from there.

What type of fluid can I use?

Thanks!
Shawn

I actually went and bought some lubrimatic t/t fluid before I saw this post. It appears to work just fine.

I filled it up, tried it, and nothing.
Filled it again (took more fluid), tried it, and it was VERY slow up, nothing down.

Filled it one more time, and VOILA! Up and down, normal speeds. Opened the plug, lots of air, filled it again.

I then noticed in the 'Down' movement, I was getting a small leak from the middle piston/cylinder at the top where the piston seals the cylinder. I figured this was my problem. However, I continued to do the up/down sweeps, as it continued to leak, and then it stopped. It is no longer leaking out of the top. Could this just be the system 'purging' the air?

Or do I need to watch this more carefully?

Thankfully it isn't anything major...or it doesn't appear to be. Worst case it may need a seal kit.

Thanks for the help.

Shawn

It'll probably keep leaking.

Is this a fairly easy fix, or does it require a new unit?

I would assume there is just a seal somewhere causing it to leak, if that's the case. Someone told me that they will 'Purge', so I assumed that was the case.

Thanks
Shawn

Just Curious Shawn, Did your power trim make a different noise at different levels ? Mine seems to be a little slow going up and has a screatching sound and then at times sounds normal enough. I too added some oil and then trimed it up and down a few times, Question, when you toped off the oil did you leave the plug out while trimming it up and down ?

Gary,

Mine did make a little bit different noise when it was low. Scratchy sounding, like you said, almost sounded like a contained electrical short, but with a mechanical sound to it (hard to describe).

I put the plug back in the reservoir when I trimmed it up/down, I wasn't sure if I should or not...but it seemed to work. I would loosen and 'bleed' the plug every 3 times or so, and let the air out.

It seems to work fine now...we'll see what happens! I'll just keep some fluid and a screwdriver handy, just in case it continues to leak and wont work again.

Thanks!
Shawn

Gary,

There really isn't a 'bleed' plug. I used the fill plug to fill and to release the air. It is located on the right hand side of the engine, on the middle of the right hand cylinder (reservoir).

Take care!
Shawn

I am having the same problem on my '86 Evinrude 175. Same leak, same squeak, same performance. Please post your final results, as I will need the same fix.

Re: Tilt/Trim problem 1995 88SPL Evinrude

Jax,

To be honest, I haven't had a problem since I filled it up. It seems like the 'excess' fluid leaked out, and then it quit leaking. I assume there is probably a slow leak, but not enough to kill it.

I've had the boat on the water 5 times since...and I've had no problems.

Sorry I couldn't help much more.

Shawn
