The trim cylinder should hold it down in reverse. Line leaking at top of tilt cylinder would cause this. Did you take the pump completly apart and if so did all BB, springs, shims go back same place. Look at drawing page 527/528 the drawing shows hyd pressure to push up or push down, when stopped pressure is same both sides, for you to lift up by hand, you would have to lose pressure on the light gray pressure side page 528 Fig 8, or the pressure would have to by pass the piston in the trim cylinder or the check valves in the piston. To check the trim cylinder cycle T/T to remove air cap the to lines going to the trim cylinder, this should lock the cylinder and you should not be able to move engine, may move some, because you will have some air in lines, when removing from pump and caping. If you can move move it up and down by hand, the piston is bypassing, or the check valve in the piston. The fitting to cap the line is a 3/16 inverted flare. Page 533 tilt cylinder leak-down test.

Re: Tilt/Trim Problem on 1988 Force 125

Bry,

Any luck with the resolution of the engine coming out of the water when reversing? I have the exact same problem and it started happening after I did a complete overhaul on the system by changing all seals etc.

After running out of ideas I took the pump and got it rebuilt at a cost of $180, it seemed to fix by leak problem bit not the reversing problem.

The person that rebuilt the pump for me claims that there is an impact valve inside the trim pump that could be faulty. When I replaced seals on by tilt pump I was not able to open it myself so I took to to someone to open it and change the O rings so I am not sure what is inside. Did you see anything that mught resemble an impact valve inside the tilt pump when you opened it?

Thanks

I've been reading all these problems and fixxes i'am no pro at boat machanics but I have rebuilt my share hyd cyl, And am amazed nobody has mentioned honeing out the bore of the cyl, you can easely use a brake hone at a slow rpm removeing any wearlines and corrosion scars, well I hope this helps sombodys problem!

The o-ring for the shuttle spool (between the pilot valves) is a 2-011. The o-rings on the pilot valves are a 2-012 and 2-013. Sometimes they are referred as #011, #012 & #013. You can find them at auto parts stores, some hardware stores and hydraulic shops.

some of them are anodized or alodized and you don't always want to hone them.
