Tilt Trim sender question

I recently put a used tilt/trim on my 85 70hp johnson and i also put a used sender on there.
I did not have a gauge so I bought the correct gauge for it.
But it appears the sender is faulty .
I believe it is wired correctly. Ignition to 12V or I on the gauge, Ground to black, and sig to the sending unit.

The gauge works in the correct direction and does go up and down but it goes from full up to full down in about a half an inch of movement of the motor.
I hitched and ohm meter across the sender and it goes from <1 ohm to open circuit in that half inch travel.

I think it should go from 1-88ohms but not sure.

Do I have a junk sender or am I missing something?

You have tilt and trim. The guage and sender only measures trim, the first part of travel.Maybe a bit more than 1/2 inch, but nowhere the full travel.

I can move it by hand and its like acts almost like a switch.
in the tilt area it reads full up shortly after it hits the trim it goes from full up to full down.

Re: Tilt Trim sender question

It's a bad sending unit. I recently did some work on mine including troubleshooting and there is a direct smooth relationship between me manually moving the sending unit up and down and the gauge. Never did it jump like you describe.

Re: Tilt Trim sender question

Well it was the sender.
I bought it local and it arrived friday.
installed it yesterday and the trim gauge works correctly now.
I am pretty sure i have it adjusted correctly.
I assume the gauge should begin moving when the tilt hits the trim pistons and runs until just b4 hitting bottom.
