Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hello Folks,
Well just got done with some more sanding and what a PITA all this sanding is.
What was I thinking.
The good news is that most of the bottom is done. Well, I still have the strikes, The other half of the bow area and some touch up on the rest of the bottom, Next I will fill in pin holes and sand that smooth again. :eek:That doesn't sound like I almost done. Then I have to do the sides and the back.:(
Arch,
I will keep plugging along until I get her done.
redfury,
All the curves are a pain. I don't care if they are inverted or not. The only thing I have found to soften it is 60-80 sand paper.
I did find out something else too. All sandpapers are not equal. I had 80 grit by two different company's and I'm here to tell you they are not the same. The off brand I had didn't cut worth a darn from the start. I'm sticking with 3M for the rest of this project.
Take care everybody.
Bob

Agreed...3M all the way. I'm sure with all of your wood experience, your familiar with those eraser type blocks for cleaning sandpaper...just thought some others here reading might not be so familiar...I find I get about three times the life from a sheet/belt of sandpaper using one....and the block itself lasts for what seems forever!

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hello all,
HSF
Thanks for the info and yes I do use the cleaners and they do help. Glad you thought to post it for those that don't know. I didn't even think about them.
Woodonglass,
Yeah, you do get what you pay for and I'm paying a lot so it should be great. :D
OK, I decided to throw up a few more pics of the progress.

I still need to sand from the strikes forward, The keel are and some leveling between the strikes.

I did manage to cut my sanding time in half with that belt sander but can't and won't even try to use it in some places. The shinny places are still wet from the wash down.
It's coming out really nice.
Take care
Bob

It's looking real smooth, Bob. All that sanding sucks but it will be worth it. Keep the pics coming.

It will make the trip by the time I put the boat back on it.
I hope to see you all out there.
TC,
I know it will be worth it, at least that's what I keep telling myself.
Take care and thanks again

I wonder how much lead is in that old "vintage" paint?
I think you have SANDwhich;d in a lot of work..
Sans the sanding you'd be done by now..
Must feel like the sands of time are flying by now.
But that tires you out Bob, the SANDman must come by early...

Ok enough...lol...

BTW
my fav TV show was SANDford and Son

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hello folks,
Well I'm home again and managed to get a few hours on the boat tonight. I'm making progress but it sure doesn't seem like it. I'll sand for awhile stop take a break and then sand some more. This sanding is really getting old. :( The boat is covered in dust again. I will give her another bath tomorrow. I still have the strikes to do and one side of of the keel then I'll have all the gel coat removed from the bottom of the hull.
Take care all.

You might become Mr Miyagi. Wax on wax off. Sanding is practice to become a Karate master :)

That is quite the restoration you have going Bob. Should be a super nice sled when you get her done. Maybe we'll see you at Eufala after you get her done. My current project is not near as in depth as yours not to mention it is just a few feet away every night so hopefully mine goes a little quicker than yours. ;)

Hey Last Mohican,
Thanks for stopping in.
I hope yours goes quicker too. When I started I didn't think that it was going to be this involved either. Next week will be one year.
OK, folks,
Her are a couple more pic's. It's amazing how much dust you can generate.

All the strikes were hand sanded, lots of fun.
Here are the pic's after her bath.
0926101728.jpg

All I have to do to the bottom is fill the pin holes and small chips.
Next I'm on to the sides and I hope that they go faster then the bottom.
If you get tired of the sanding pic's just let me know. :p
One more thing in the mix, I quit my job last Friday and start a new one in two weeks in South Carolina. One year there and then I will be moved to a plant One hour from my house and should get to be home almost every night.:D
Take care all and have a great week.

Thanks Triton II,
No such luck on the break between. They wanted me there yesterday. It's going to be a very short weekend. I have to move My stuff from Tennessee to Kentucky Friday and then Head to South Carolina, Sun.
I think it's going to a great move long term.
Thanks again
